No its not rude. You pay to eat there so you can make any request that isn't unreasonable. Its just like asking for a booth instead of a table or a window seat.
Making later dinner plans and avoiding family type restaurants is a way of avoiding those situations. However you cant always dictate the time & location. You just have to hope the people taking their kids out have taught them some manners.

It is not rude of you to do so.
The rude people are those who take their children everywhere and do not control their behaviour. Howestly, if I wanted to be subjected to children's behaviour, I would have my own.
I understand that child-rearing is a difficult and exhausting job. However, letting Johnny and Becky run rampant just because youhave learned how to tune out their nosie does not make it you have it OK to subject others to them.
And then there are the parents who don't bring anything to occupy their child. No wonder the kid gets bored. They just can't sit quietly for a great length of time. And SOME parents who actually hand the spoon to Baby so that he/she can bang it on the high-chair!!

Of course it isn't rude. You have the right to have a peaceful meal. You might as for a quiet table and hopefully the hostess will know to keep you away from children. If you are taken to a table near children, simply say, "I am afraid this won't be quiet enough."

I wouldn't say it was RUDE---if you want peace and quiet though I wouldn't go to a restaurant that is mostly known as a "FAMILY RESTAURANT"... stay away from MacDonalds and Burger King or Wendy's.... you shouldn't have any problem if you DINE later in the evening either---Or you could always ask to be put futher away from a table with children BUT, you run the risk of having the next group WITH children put next to YOU....

Not at all, on the contrary I feel it is rude and selfish for people with obvious out of control children to expect normal people to be forced to deal with the issues of their child by bringing them to diners, movies etc where they know quiet and peaceful atmosphere is on the venue.

Not at all. I like children (Sort of) But most of them when they are younger and know no better, are very annoying. I can get irritated easy and prefer not to spend time with them as I end up wanted to rip out my hair. lol

Not at all. A big part of restaurant business is "atmosphere" and if the kiddos ruin it for you then I'm sure the restaurant would be more than happy to seat you somewhere else. They are after your business and cash anyway. Everyone has their preferences.

We do that every Thanksgiving. The kids get to chat and goof at their table and the adults sit at one.
