We went down to the lake and picked some black walnuts and I read here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Walnut that you first let them dry out for 2 weeks then you soak them in boiling water for 24 hrs well this is only the 1st week of them drying out and they seem like they have rotted!! We had them drying in a room in our house that we don't use and it was really hot in there so do you think the heat caused them to rott if not why do you think they rotted?? Thanks!!

The nuts should be fine. It is just the husks that are
deteriorating. That is actually what you want, otherwise it is very difficult to get them off.

If you mean the husk rotted, no problem. The nutmeats are still good as long as they were not picked too soon before the shell had a chance to harden. Take a hammer and crack a couple to find out. Black walnuts are a lot of work to get out of the shell but sure are good.

Yep, you have to let them dry out, they were green when you first got them I take it? AND, they take forever to get the friggin' nuts out. I tried it, ended up throwing the buggers out because my hands were black in the end.
