Just be comfortable with yourself.
Don't make expectations that are too high.

Start with a small audience. Maybe just invite one friend over.
Then, gradually, as you build up your confidence, invite more and more people over.
It takes work, but if you're diligent, then soon enough you'll be fine performing in front of your family and friends.

I just wrote this for another questioner - same goes for you!

I have taught vocal music since 1971. I tell my students in Voice Class that at the beginning, it is 90 percent psychology and 10% music - and that THEY will see it shift as they become more confident. We start with the ENTIRE group singing - 2 weeks. Then 2 weeks of 5 at a time - then 4 - then 3 - then 2. We stay at 2 at a time for a while - and then I tell them that we are going to take volunteers to sing something SHORT (could be one verse) alone. I have taught them MANY vocal skills by this time, and they know that *their turn is coming* -and that I will also SLAM their grade if they interfere, ridicule or distract someone performing. They face ME, not the class. Next time, they face sideways - the class is in their peripheral vision. Next time ( and we are going thru maybe 25 kids in a class, so *next time* is sometimes 2 weeks away!) they face front, but look OVER the class at a point behind them. They KNOW what each step is going to be, how long we will take to get there, and how long we will stay there. No surprises. This helps build confidence. One girl started out being SO terrified, that she would video herself at home, to prove to me she COULD do it - just not yet in class.

I pick the songs, from a listing that we use for State competitions ( I am also a judge, but am not allowed to judge my own kids, of course, our any kids in the COUNTY I teach in - I know their teachers.) That way, they are all working on material that they do not have to worry about - I picked the song of the week - done deal. If they CHOOSE to sing at this competition, I give them a 100 on the *singing* portion of their finale exam (they still have to take the written). They have to sign up months ahead. Many would rather sing for *somebody I will never see again* than for their class - but AFTER doing this competition, they have even MORE confidence - so there!

So - find a good voice teacher. If there is Voice Class in your school - TAKE IT! If it is a private teacher, they may do master classes (where you sing for each other) or recitals, where family is invited. Set YOURSELF micro-goals, as I do for my students. Progress means EVERY time you are LITTLE bit better - you do not have to be better all at ONCE! It's like a diet - if you need to lose 50 pounds, plan on losing one or two a week - no problem - and the fifty will happen. If you try to lose TEN a week - you will get disgusted and quit. Can you eat an entire elephant?? Sure - one bite at a time . .

How about trying to do it in costume? Even with your face in full makeup..then you are no longer you..you're the character and you can sing like him/her..not yourself..

After doing it this way in front of people you will gain confidence and no longer be afraid...

Try it first just acting 'till you get the feel for it..

Being scared is natural, and, believe it or not, all the more reason you should do it. Who better to practice in front of until you get over your stage fright? Each time you'll gain one more experience at doing it and "practice makes better."

: ) Good Luck!

you can try focusing on a particular spot or object in the room and sing. this way you don't have to see the expression on their faces whether it is bad or not. try it and i hope it works
