I'd get that fantasy out of my head if I were you. Unless you speak, read and write the language and know the culture, you're better off just staying here. Their take on women's rights is 20 years behind ours (the Catholic Church's doing) and let's just say they aren't the best when it comes to air conditioning.

In other words, unless you're offered a job there, don't think about it.

Find out more about your family, see if they can help you get a room or something...and ask them what the cost of life is up there. Search for good intensive courses you can take to learn the language and learn as much as you can about Italy before you move up there. Pack your bags and go :)
Good luck!

Apply for your passport and go to the Italian Embassy in the US to get the documents youll need to reside in Italy.Do NOT give up your citizenship, tho. Youll have trouble getting that back.

Go there for college. You will be around english speakers too, and it will be much easier to get a job. Once you are there for a while, you will have a much better time. Plus, if you go there for school, there will be dorms, which can solve the housing problem. Once you are established, look for a job, and once you can show that you are supporting Italian economy, they will be more welcoming.

Pack your bags, go to the airport and catch a plane to Italy. When you get there, ask the carabenieri how to become a citizen. Simple enough.
