You should really have a vet or groomer show you for the first time. If you accidently cut a vein it can bleed a lot!!

If he has white nails, just don't cut into the quick, which is the blood supply. Black nails are trickier. Some dogs have a hollow nail, and if you look at it from the bottom, you can see the fleshy quick--just cut the hollow portion off. If no hollow area, then you need to use a very good sharp cutter; I like Resco brand. Shave off just a bit at a time. Look at the cross section that has been cut--it will have a whitish grey center. The closer you get to the quick, the darker grey it will get. It will be almost black when you are right on top of the quick. Stop here! Have some Kwik Stop powder on hand just in case you get too close. It's not the end of the world if you nick the quick, but is does sting and the dog won't like it. You can also have a vet tech or groomer show you where to cut.

You want to clip them near the edge of the quick. If your dog's nails are white / opaque, it is easy to see that vein in the center of the nail and where it ends. However, if the dog's nail are black it is tougher to tell where the edge of that quick is. You never want to nick the quick as the nail will bleed heavily and be quite painful for your pet. If the nail is black, check the back-side of the nail and find were there is a small notch. That notch is approximately where the end of the quick will probably be.
If you are nervous about clipping the dog's nails, take them to a groomer or vet and pay them to do it.
Good luck.

Depends on the dogs toe nails. If they are white you can see where the quick ends but in black toe nails it is hard to tell.
Clip off some 1/4 inch, if you cut the quick use regular flour, talac powder, baby poweder to stop the bleeding. If you cut the nail & you don't see a little black spot in the middle you can cut off some more. WATCH for that little black spot & don't cut any further.

in line with the pad of the foot is usually a safe bet if they're dark, but if the nails are clear, stay about 2mm away from the red part
