To chat/have drinks? Not necessarily for sex people!
I only have one night in the city and am just looking to get to know this person on a more intimate level. Again not necessarily for sex!

It seems like a weird awkward situation of 'hey, would you like to come back to my hotel and grab a coffee and chat even though it is midnight?"

You simply can not ask someone back to your room without the innuendo of wanting to have sex hanging there. It is just one of those known, unspoken associations. If you really just want to have coffee or an after dinner drink, then you will have to suggest either the bar, or cafe'. If you are being honest with yourself, and you really want intimacy, then ask them to your room. I personally do not think that is a good idea, especially if you are looking for a long term relationship. If it is a one night stand, then by asking them to your room will definitely be the more probable outcome. Better decide what is is you truly want here, once you choose, there is no going back!

Asking someone late to your room a hotel at that may give the impression of sex. If you are only going to talk find an all night cafe or ask this person if they know a place you guys could continue to talk. But if you want it to lead to sex then go to the room.

Well if it's not intended for sex, don't ask them to your hotel. Is there a coffee shop close? Or just say: Hey do you want to come up to my room and we can talk. I'm not interested in anything more. Be honest!

Ladies, men don't have a problem asking, so why should we? If you are an adult, and so is he what's the problem? You stated you just wanted to chat,I see no problem. Find out his name first, a safer way would be have a drink in the hotel lobby.

I wouldn't invite any one to your room. Even if you just met him the same night and he seems nice. You need to be very careful. A guy you just met might take it differently when you invite him up to your room. Go grab a coffee at the coffee shop if you want to just chat, it's a lot safer.

Kay, here's the thing....you are asking someone to come back to your hotel room, late at night for drinks....anyone that is offered that is going to think it's for sex. that is really the bottom line. if you do not want to "imply" sex, then I would suggest having drinks at a public place so it does not "imply" sex. and if one thing leads to another...... ;)

Well, you can SAY, "I'm enjoying your company so much that I hate to end the evening. Would you like to join me in my room for drinks?"
I can assure you however that this person IS going to think he's just been invited to more than "drinks".

Ask the person of your choice to take you to your hotel, then
ask him if he'd like to join you for a night cap, or whatever. It's done in the movies.
