I have two cats. One 7 one 5 years old. The 7yo has started peeing in other places then her litter box. The day before yesterday on a piece of cardboard on the ground. Today it was in an empty laundry basket on the same spot as the cardboard was. A few days ago it was on the other side of the room on a workout mat. Most of these areas are in the same room as her litter box. Any suggestions?

Make sure that her litter box is clean and not smelling. This is
one of the first reasons for them to stop using their box.

I trust the single protecting the cat could be attempting to tell you some thing is incorrect with it, A vet examine up does no longer harm, I had a cat that had a bladder an infection as quickly as and it did an analogous component, it is pee became dark in shade and kind of crystallized. The cat I even have now began pooping around the abode and now and back peeing, he's approximately 5 yrs previous. I would take your cat the vet. It is possible she has a urinary tract infection. While cats do occasionally mark (generally male cats) outside of their litter boxes, I don't think that this is behavioral. You say she has gone several times over the last few days, always in new places which doesn't sound like any kind of territorial marking behavior. Your vet will do a quick check on her urine to determine if there is an infection that is causing this. If there is, your vet will probably prescribe an antibiotic to clear up the problem.

Most times it is to mark their territory but sometimes it can be because the litter box is needing a cleaning. If it keeps up and the litter box is clean, check with your vet. Could be something medically wrong then.

Usually because of a urinary tract infection. Have the vet check her out. If all is normal, then address behavior issues. You may need to confine short term, change litter boxes, change litter, add more litter boxes, etc.

Have you changed brands of litter? Are you keeping the box clean? If you answered no to both of these questions, I would definitely recommend taking her to the vet for a check up. She could have something as simple as a bladder infection or it could be the first signs of kidney disease. Good luck!

she may not like the litter, or she may not like the smell of it. a lot of times cats dont like scented litter, or can be picky about their litter. if you recently changed brands this could be the culprit. the litter could be too deep, or too shallow, or she could possibly not like how it feels, or someone could have startled her or scared her while she was using the litter box and now she is wary of returning to that area. cats have to feel safe and secure, preferibly in a place where they can see their surroundings and cant be snuck up on. I read a few articles that said that cats prefered fresh step clumping unscented litter. my cat was doing the same them as yours. i switched to this litter and she completely stopped cold. hasnt peed on anything since..knock on wood.

Maybe her cat litter box is dirty. Cats always use it in other places when their litter box is dirty. Or maybe she smells something in those areas. Maybe the other cat is threatening to her. All very possible reasons.

yeah, they will pee in other places if they find that the places where they are peeing isnt substantial anymore. ex: my one cat started peeing in the hamper when i got another b.c it didnt have it to himself anymore. you might have to either get another litter box or change it more often. i recommend feline pine, best stuff i ever used for my cats litter boxes.
