No, they really don't get paid, except from tips -- they're paid very little, much less than minimum wage, based on the assumption that most of their money comes from tips.

If you refuse to tip, you are getting their services free, in effect, you're stealing from them.

Yes, it's a dumb system, and it would make a lot more sense for their employers to pay them, and add the cost to the price they charge us, that way the cost to us would be right there on the menu.

But, as long as that's not the case, not typing is theft.

If you knew what a waitress got paid,
you wouldn't ask that question-
they get paid very little because of their profession-
they get lower wages due to the fact that in their profession, they usually get tipped per table, which finally then gives her that $7-$8 dollar an hour job,,,,it isn't a pleasant job, it is hell on the feet, hands and wrists, some people aren't all that charming to deal with, and when you don't get tipped, that makes for an even worse attitude!!!
It takes a special person to be a good waitress, and if they get it right, your food is warm and she is polite,,,what is a flippin' dollar man,,,,,if you are that concerned with paying a waitress,. I agree with the first fella, DON'T GO OUT!

They only get paid something like $2 an hour in the anticipation of making it up in tips. Would you like to work for $2 an hour? We are 5 so I know how expensive it is to eat out. I count tipping as part of the price. Don't go out if you can't afford it or let the waitress know ahead of time she will not be getting a tip to be fair.

Because waiters and waitresses make below minimum pay scale, they work hard to make your evening out as pleasurable as they can and this isn't always an easy task. They have to take the hit if you don't like something about your meal even though they aren't the chefs. And they are left to clean up your mess. Tips are also subject to taxes so really for all their work, depending on the type of restaurant, upscale or family style, they aren't getting rich from your tip. Be nice and tip according to service.

It's common knowledge that Waitresses are paid minimally by their employers because it is well-established tradition that their primary source of income is from tips.
Good waitresses work their fannies off and deserve generous gratuities from their customers. If I knew of any establishment whose owners demanded a cut of the 'tips' I would 86 that place permanently.
Those fast food joints where the customer orders, pays and serves himself and provide a "Tip" container even get a little bit of incentive to continue to provide pleasant service and good food...with emphasis on the latter.

Waitstaff are actually excluded from minimum wage legislation precisely because tips from customers are considered a standard part of their earnings. If you don't tip, they won't even make minimum wage. If you are so concerned about money for your family, imagine what it's like for your poor waitress who's trying to take care of her own with the money she makes at the restaurant! You should always tip at LEAST 15%, if not 20. If you don't want to pay extra for a tip, then just get your food to go.

The server makes very little and is dependent on the tips to make a living and also like others have said unfortunately that is so they will do a good job but. I also have six in my family. It can get expensive to eat out but the server shouldn't have to pay the difference. I do keep in mind how much she has done for us and all in deciding whether she is worth the whole 20%.

...so that the food industry doesn't have to start charging you $15 at ponderosa for your meal instead of $8.99 just to pay the waitresses MINIMUM WAGE and basically say the tip's no longer up to you.

You pay a helluva lot of money because you chose to have the Brady Bunch and don't even know how to spell the word PAID...who's problem is that?

Our society has created a norm that says it's proper to tip servers because they're paid something like $2/hour. I don't know why our federal government set this wage so low for them (someone told me it's to help keep restaurants' overhead costs low, but lots of businesses have high costs), but this is the basic reason for it. If you think about it, there are other professions that are hard on the body and serve other people (like policemen and firefighters), but they're paid way more. So anyway, it's because of legislation.

Wait staff earns a low wage (only a few dollars an hour) because they are working for the customer, not for the restaurant. TIPS stands for "to insure prompt service" and you are expected to tip service people a certain percentage of the cost of your meal. If you do not feel that you can afford to tip the service person, you might want to eat at home. Failing to tip the wait staff causes them to work hard for you (for free) and lose wages that they could have earned working for someone else.

In a lot of restaurants, the wait staff contributes to a tip pool for other low-wage employees who help to make your restaurant experience more enjoyable... like bussers.

I agree that tipping all service people is a bit excessive... like I can't stand when there's a tip jar on the counter at Starbucks.
