A few ways to go about this. You can take care of the problem from the inside as well as the outside.

You may observe quicker results working on the exterior: Bathing your cat with shampoo made especially for cats. Some products with oatmeal seem to provide that extra luster to the coat. Frequent brushing (daily or every other day) to eliminate unthriving fur.

Best bet and longer-lasting solution would be to make sure your cat is receiving an adequate, balanced nutrition. Avoid feeding your cat table scraps or even cheap grocery brand cat food. Quality really does pay off and make a difference. Brands like Hills (Science Diet), Eukanuba, IAMS, and Purina produce well-balanced cat food in both dry (kibbles) and wet (canned) forms. Certain products even mention that they will help improve your cat's coat quality or maintain shiny coat. Products supplemented with antioxidants such as Vitamin E, Selenium, and Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil do wonders in improving coat quality.

Lastly, make sure there are no underlying causes to why your cat's coat may be looking dull. There are multiple conditions such as dermatopathy (skin disease) to endocrinopathy (hormonal disease) that would cause poor coat quality. Dermatopathy could result from things like external parasitism and/or underlying endocrinopathy such as diabetes, hyperthyroidism, and less frequently Cushing's or Addison's disease. Your veterinarian would be able to help you determine any disease process should it exist.

But for your average, otherwise healthy cat, I would focus on better nutrition and proper bathing and grooming habits for your feline friend! >^..^<

Add a fatty acid supplement, in the form of fish oil, to its food. This is sold OTC in many forms. Make sure it's fish oil (eicosapentenoic acid) and not linoleic acid. Will make his skin healthy and coat shiny, plus very anti-inflammatory for allergies as well! Your vet can recommend a brand, or you can order them on line from pet suppliers or buy from pet stores.

Feed a high-quality CANNED food that is high in meat, protein and fat. Cats need these things. They don't need grain or vegetable fillers.
