Yes because you have an immediate family member who has had the problem. Anytime you have immediate family members with a health issue, your risk of developing the same problem(s) are greater.

Well its nice to be in the sun as it is not all that common some years .. As kids in 30's 40's it was often hot and sunny and we got sun burnt quite often ,, bright red sometimes , It peeled and itched and that was it ,, No one seemed to get skin cancer or any long lasting effects ,, So why has it now become such a problem ?? We didn't have sun creams and blockers .. just calamine lotion to soothe the burns , is it that there is far more UV now than then ?? Lots of English people are fair skinned so burn and freckle more than tan ,,

It's spelled melanoma, and you may be at risk. You're doing the right thing by using sunscreen. Also, try to stay out of the sun between 10 am and 2 pm. See a dermatologist and have your skin checked.

The first thing you DONT do, is panic!
It sounds like you are doing the right thing, using loads of sunblock. You should also make sure you wear a hat and if possible dont go out in the sun in the middle of the day when it's at it's hottest.
This is a wake up call for you, you need to keep a check on your skin, if you notice any changes in moles or freckles or puckering of your skin you need to get to a doctor. Just become aware of what your skin is like now and be aware of any changes and take them seriously.
Make sure you give your Dad a lot of love and support, I'm sure that he will be fine. Perhaps it would be a good idea to make an appointment with your doctor for your own peace of mind.
Good Luck to you and your Dad.

Sunburn can eventually lead to skin cancer. If you're asking if you are at greater risk than the average person, because of your father's history, I would say yes, slightly higher. Use of sunscreen, clothing and hats as well as uv filtering glasses is smart for any of us. Keep up the sunscreen and be sure to pay close attention to your skin. Have any changes checked by a dermatologist, unless you're certain they are benign.

Yes, as it may carry in the genes, and with sensitive skin, you can't really avoid sunburn unfortunately. Get the highest factor you can. Loreal do a good one (for kids but anyone can use it), it has like factor 50 or 60 - the highest one around. It is also sand and water resistant. Sunburn hurts - i got it recently on my shoulders becuase I stupidly forgot to re-apply the sun lotion. So that's what you need to do - Re-apply every 15-mins - half hour. Good luck.. =] xx Try not to worry, though ..

You might be at greater risk since it runs in your family...but does your dad work outside alot without sunscreen? How much time someone spends outside can also increase their suseptibility to skin cancer.
I also burn VERY easily, and have found that about the only thing that works for me is to use SPF 60+ and try to do most of my outside time in the evenings. If you keep using your SPF and try to avoid the sun as much as possible, you will lower your risk of skin cancer dramatically.

Melanoma is a very nasty cancer. Skin cancer seems to be the top cancer of all nowadays. Melanoma is highly invasive. Just to let you know, and this is a fact, The first sunburn you receive puts you at risk for melanoma 10X more.
