Me and my cousin are enlisting into the marines after highschool. My friend says he's gonna do it to. The truth is... He is over-weight. Plays too many video games and eats very unhealthy. Right now I'm trying to help him get in shape and eat healthier. The problem is, that he is very lazy. Right now, I'm trying to get him to run at least 2 miles with me. When I ask him, he says "No man, I'm good."......when he's not obviously.
I get mad at him sometimes because it seems like he his destroying his body with too much sleep and unhealthy foods. We have 3 years before me and my cousin enlist. Do you think my friend can even make it to basic training?

Also, I think that he thinks that the Military is like a video game. Which it's obviously not.

Let him take the physical and see if he passes. There are weight standards. If he doesn't meet them he doesn't get in. The same goes for anyone else who is thinking of enlisting. Three years is a long time. Lots of things can change in that span of time.

When he has a Marine DI breathing down his neck trust me he won't be sitting like a lump anywhere.
He will get through basic training much easier if he starts running and working out now - but the physical part of boot camp is only a small part of training received. (though if you are very out of shape it does move to the forefront of your mind)
The mental stuff is the truly hard part - DI's have the difficult job of taking 18 year old people and turning them into someone that can survive a combat situation.
Ask anyone in the military - it is NOTHING like a video game -not even close.
Tell your friend to rent and watch "Full Metal Jacket" - it's harsh, but a pretty fair depiction of what boot camp for the Navy and Marines is like.

When you get to MCRD they will put you into a processing platoon before you actually start training for about a week. During that week you will have to take an inventory physical fitness test which is basically a watered down version of the actual PFT that Marines take. If you cant pass that inventory PFT then you do not possess the basic physical ability to even start bootcamp. Should that happen then they will put you into a remedial PT platoon for however many weeks it takes for you to actually pass the inventory PFT. This can mean that your bootcamp is extended. If it takes you 4 weeks to pass the inventory PFT then your bootcamp has now become 17 weeks instead of 13 weeks.
So I guess you can tell your friend that his incentive to get in shape is that his bootcamp will not take longer than 13 weeks.
You can not work out prior to going to USMC bootcamp, and you can show up a fat lazy nasty bastard. However that will mean that they are going to have to take more time fixing you prior to letting you actually train to become a Marine.
Its his choice really. My advice would be to show up as in shape as possible because it does make things easier.
The Drill Instructors really dont like fat asses, they single them out for everything, and look for any reason to PT the sh-i-t out of them.

Lazy people don't make it in the Marines.
I wish you and your cousin the best, and thank you for deciding to help defend my freedom. It's not a video game. The blood and sweat are real...

football / soccer ( neighborhood type thing if a team is not available to join ).
lifting some weights..make a game out of it..who can lift more and more reps ( i wouldn't over shine him, he may lose interested before any good is gained from it )

he will have no difficulty whatsoever, some of the biggest douchebag tubs of Goo, go onto successful careers in the Corps. They don't want the physical specimens, just the ones w/warped impressionable little minds.

being a marine is not a thought. it's a passion. sitting on your a**. won't cut it. ask him if he knows what it involves or saying because he looks up to you. if he is serious start off with a mile run.

honestly you have to pass the weight before you even go to basic as long as he passes that then the rest of his weight will melt off during traning, only thing is he has to be strong minded becasue they will tottaly mess with your mind in the marines.

He's worthless....But don't tell him anything...Let him try....And watch him fall on his....Worse case scenario is that he proves you right....The best case scenario and the least probable is that he proves you wrong and he makes. So, stop preaching to him, because he won't learn that way.

if he thinks like that let him try to even get into the boot camp. if you guys are in jrotc or if there is that program in your school, ask one of the instructors to help you guys out and put you through training like they would have in boot camp. thatll change his attitude really quick
