i have a 5 month old great dane puppy. he's usually a very hyper and all-in-your-face-wanting-kisses kinda dog.

ever since friday night he has vomited at least twice a day. the vomit is a runny brown liquid (assuming its dog food!). he has diarhea that has a couple solid chunks in it but the rest is teh brown runny liquid. there is NO blood in his poop (thank god).

he's not eating much at all and i hafta force him to drink. i've been feeding him ice cubes like crazy because he loves them.

he won't get up and play, he literally lays around and sleeps. normally when someone walks in teh front door, Duke is right there jumpin up and barking. but instead, he's been laying around doing nothing.

i'm kinda worried. If he's not better monday i'm taking him to the vet.

but if anyone has any ideas as to what it could possibly be, it'd be greatly appreciated!!

I agree very much with Danelover .. You need to take your pup to the vet.. because he is not eating that could be something serious.. its good your giving him icecubes, but with how hot it is it may not be enough since he is also having the diarhea..
With the pup being lethargic, that is a sign he needs vet attention.. and sonner than MONDAY..

As a fellow great dane owner, please contact your vet as soon as possible. Diarrhea and vomiting quickly leads to dehydration which leads to death. It is good that you are trying to keep him hydrated the best you can with the ice, but at this point he needs IV fluids. It could be that he is sick from eating something not meant for him or it could be a more serious disease, so the vet will have to do some lab tests to confirm the cause, but don't wait any longer to see if the illness will pass or he will die from the dehydration.

It could be a lot of things, from parasites, to viruses, to poison. Only your vet can tell you for sure.

You're doing the right thing by feeding him ice cubes, it will help keep him hydrated.

Do you have a 24 hour emergency vet? If so, I would really strongly urge you to go ahead and take him in. Chances are he's going to recover just fine, but just in case it is something serious, you really need to get him checked out.

You gave her a shot? Of what? One injection will not cure parvo (nothing can, its a virus), and if you mean you vaccinated her, it wouldn't help anyway at that point because her immune system is already crapped out. If you want a more definite answer, contact a vet like you should have done already. Just because your other two dogs came out fine doesn't mean this one will, and diarrhea/vomiting combined quickly leads to dehydration which is very serious.

Danes are prone to bloat. This is another possibility that requires immediate vet attention! I hope all works out! Heres a link all about it-

oops.. my mistake. I checked this article to be sure b/c I thought Danes are more likely to get bloat than other breeds and I do know someone whose 6 month old puppy had it. My bad though didnt know it was rare in pups. either way vet is in order now.

You should NOT be waiting until Monday to get this pup seen by a vet....CALL a vet NOW!!! Symptoms you describe can be a signal of a serious problem in a puppy and puppies can go down hill very quickly.

****Dane puppies aren't prone to bloat..it is very rare under a year of age*****

it could be a virus. this happened to my dog a couple of times, usually after he stayed at the kennel, and the emergency vet clinic told me to make him plain white rice and boiled chicken to eat, which they call a bland diet. your main concern is to keep him hydrated, because the vomiting and diarrhea can dehydrate your pup. don't force him to eat if he won't eat. does he have all of his shots? I'm pretty sure he'll be okay until the morning but if he gets any worse I'd locate an emergency vet clinic.

It sounds like Parvo, two of my pups had it, one didnt make it. You need to see a vet PRONTO. If you have a vet call line you may be able to tell them what is going on, they may know what it is and be able to get you the perscription even if you cant go in. You need to take care of your pup right away, I hope he is alright.
Good luck.

It sounds like parvo. Is he up on his shots? Parvo can be deadly. I would call the vet for an emergency visit especially if he isn't eating or drinking.

It could be any number of things. Has he been vaccinated? Take him to the vet, they're the only ones that can tell you for sure.
