*1. Rat Pinata-- layer several paper towels flat on a surface and put a handful of favorite treats in the middle, now fold up the sides and hang from a high place where then will have to reach up to get to it.. they love it! =]

*2. Bobbing for Peas-- have a big rubbermate and fill it about an inch deep with luke warm water and some empty tupperware (for rats who dont like sitting in the water) then add frozen peas/corn- but not too much! just about 4-5 per rat because you dont want them to get sick :) i have had some times when the rats dont even care about the food they just like the bath :)

*3. Hard Boiled Egg-- slightly crack open a hard boiled egg and add rats =] they will go CRAZY over it

*4. Randomness box-- have a shoe box or a plastic box of some sort and full it loosely with crumpled paper wads.. dish cloths.. old t shirts.. Kleenex boxes.. what ever you have around your house thats rat safe! but hide some of their favorite treats among the mess.. they will search the entire place looking for more goodies :)

*5. Digging Box-- Get some cheap parakeet food froma local store. get a tupperware and fill it with potting soil. dig little holes around in the soil and dump some seeds in them and cover them back up. With dirt.. water once a day untill most seed have sprouted and you have a little garden for your rats. Add rats and they will LOVE it! they spend so much time digging up the seeds and eatin the sprouts =]

=] hope this helped =]

Get some PVC piping from your hardware store and use if for tunnels. I also drilled holes in each end of the piping and then hung it from the top of the cage so that they could jump up and into the tube. I also attached a ladder to one end so that they could climb up to the tube as well. I put the some tubes on the floor of the cage as they loved to sleep in them. The other nice thing about them is that they are so easy to clean.

Have fun with your ratties!!

Hey, I just got me 2 new pet rats. You will love having pet rats. Rats are 'normal' pets just like dogs and cats.
If you pick them up continuously they will become more social. They are ususally hyper during the night. Even though you want to make homemade toys you should still buy wooden chew sticks for them to chew on.
Make a hammock out of a sock and paperclips. Hang it in their cage.
Use toilet paper rolls w/o the TP they love to go through them like tunnels.
If you want to use something bigger;; cutt off the ends of a water bottle and duck tape the edges that were cut so that they don't cut themselves on the edges.

here's tonns of more ideas. Hope this helps.
And please send me some pictures of your cute ratties:]]
And i'll send you some pictures of mine:]]

Um, If you looking for ladders and stuff, you don't have to be so specific. Look under the bird section for ladders, and like huts for farrets or hamsters. Look for sales, or buy someting little each time you shop, It'll be less expensive that way. Homade things work just as well, for my hamster I used my old snow globe box and i punched holes in the top, and she sleeps in there. She loves it so I'm sure your rats will be fine with whatever you give them to keep them busy. Hope this helps!

I see a couple people have listed that website, and it's really helpful. I got lots of ideas for my rats off there, and they had lots of fun with the toys. In general, rats will play with nearly anything that makes a crinkly type noise...I had one that LOVED grocery sacks.
