If the file you are trying to play is an MPEG2 file, for which Windows Media Player does not include a codec, try Stinky's Codec available at http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Stinkys_MPEG2_Codec or http://tinyurl.com/2rqekd. It has solved my MPEG2 playback problems 100% of the times I have tried it.
Be careful installing too many codecs. They don't all like each other and can cause your computer to do ugly things. Install only what you need.

Easiest thing to do is download divx player which is free. Once you have done this your files should play either in the divx player or media player without any problems.

Open the player go to help then check for updates allso check tools download plugins then go to options to see if the dvd tag is their if not then the plugin is not installed.
