the smacking is annoying, it's distracting, the gum ends up on the bottom of a desk or table or some other piece of furniture that wasn't originally designed with gum on it. And you probably didn't bring enough for everybody. nyahhhh.

It's because the teachers think that when you chew gum, you focus more on chewing than on working. I don't know if it's true, though. It can also be annoying to some people, and distracting to the people around you. I personally don't find it annoying unless you're chewing with your mouth open so it's really loud and you snap a bubble every 2 seconds. But otherwise it doesn't distract me, but I'm not your teacher. But I once heard that one year a girl took a state test without chewing gum and got an ok score. The next year she took the same test but she was chewing gum and she did better. So she was saying she got a better score because of the gum but, I don't know.

I hope I could help!

You may be a good kid. You may not spit your guy on the floor, in the locker, or smush it under the desk. But thousands, probably millions of kids do each year. If your school has carpet then it is an even worse problem. One school where I worked hired high school kids in the summer who spent THE WHOLE SUMMER scraping gum off of stuff. GROSS. So while it may be the farthest thing from your mind, and seem unjust that you can't chew gum, it is the amount of time and money that it take to clean all the gum up!

If you got detention for chewing gum at school, then obviously there is a rule against it at your school. I am sure that the rule is stated in your school handbook, and I imagine that you were made aware that it was against the rules. You do not have to like rules that are set in school - some of them seem really stupid. However, if it is a rule, and you choose to break it, then you have to suffer the consequences. I would imagine that this rule was made because so many people do not have the courtesy to dispose of gumk properly. It ends up on the floor or the bottom of desks or even on walls. I am sure you can look around and see that this happens! Regardless of why the rule was made, if there is one, you have to abide by it, whether you think it is a stupid rule or not....that's the breaks!

First of all, believe it or not, it's a choking hazard. Second, chewing and smacking gum while others are trying to do schoolwork is distracting. Also, with zero tolerance at school, any time they see you put anything in your mouth, it could be illegal substances. The last reason is why this was against school rules YEARS ago, when I was a kid...and that is because kids tend to put their chewed gum under desks, on walls, floors, etc. It makes a big mess. The only other alternative to throwing it away is swallowing it, and that's not a great idea either.

Most schools have a very low budget for replacing things damaged by students with gum. Therefore, administrators do not want to deal with gum, besides it causes disruption.

Because it is a distraction to you and to people around you when you pop and smack your gum. Also, kids get tired of it and stick it under desks and it is gross and hard to get off. I'm not saying you do any or all of these things, but one person can ruin it for everyone, you know?

Tell your favorite teachers that your friends dared you to get a detention, but that you don't want to do anything to really get in trouble. They will probably laugh and give you a detention slip to show your friends.

It's a direct violation of the Constitutional "Right to Chew Gum."

Get over it. Rules are rules. Follow them and shut up.
