I'm 18 years old and (obviously) a female, and am going into the Navy. Hopefully in the CT (Cyrptological Technician) field. I was wondering if anyone had any advice for me? Other than stuff that is common sense please! Thanks!

Also, I know the "what to bring" list has the basics but is there anything else I should bring that won't be considered contraband?

Boot camp is pretty easy; just follow orders, keep your shut, and pay attention to detail.

If you get into CT A school, study hard and learn the rate.

Navy life is good and I am glad I enlisted. Even though I left active duty after 5 1/2 years, I still am in the Reserves. I miss going to sea and seeing the world, but I don't miss midnight watches and sleeping in 3stack racks.

1. You are already 29 years old. Do not accept a contract that has you as anything less than an e-3 out of boot camp. If possible get a c-school with e-4 upon completion. Being older and a seaman recruit can get a little old real quick. Not to mention depending on your job it could be 3 or 4 years before you make e-4. 2. In boot camp either kick a** and take names or shut your mouth, help your shipmates and do as you are told. 3. Under no circumstances pick apprentice training/undesignated as your job field unless you want to work 20 hours a day on the flight deck or to eventually become a boatswains mate. 4. Do the research pick a rate in a field you want to work in. If you already have experience in that field should benefit you with a better initial pay grade in your contract. There is nothing worse than being locked into a contract for 4 years in a job you hate. 5. If you mind being told what to do by kids who are 20 the military might not be for you. 6. Remember that the Navy gets Better 1 retirement at a time. Feel free to E-mail if you have any questions and welcome to the navy

In Boot Camp keep your mouth shut, eyes open, study hard, and do exactly what you are told.
When you go through your schooling, focus on what you are doing. Do not get caught up in the wrong crowd. Do what is right even when others are not watching. Focus, focus, focus. Study, study, study. If you graduate #1 in your class you can earn a meritorious promotion.
When you get to your first command, again watch out not to get mixed up with the wrong crowd and adopt that bad attitude. Keep studying and get all the qualifications you can. Always be working on something to make yourself better. Once you get all your required quals, start cross-training. Make people show you procedures in writing, and not just settle for "well that is the way we have always done it." That will increase your knowledge as well and enable you to find information on your own. Strive to be the best, be confident, but not cocky. Perform as if you are going to make a career out of the Navy whether or not you plan on doing 4 years or 20 years. Go to school, get an education. The Navy pays for it. Good luck.

Just do your best at whatever they ask of you regardless whether it seems reasonalbe or not. Boot camp is a breeze for those who do that. If you get homesick or a little depressed, take your mind off yourself by helping a shipmate who is having more difficulty than you are. You can start preparing for the CT rating by finding out as much as you can from your recruiters about the different jobs CTs do and then aiming in that direction . For example, do you want to operate communications equipment? Do secretary work? Learn a foreign language? Study hard, try hard and work hard and you can be a CT. I was one for nearly 25 years and am glad I was. Good luck.

Make sure you study, study, study! You don't want to get set back two weeks for failing any tests. Memorize your general orders, you will be asked those alot. Good luck!

P.S.- don't try to hold your breath in the gas chamber! It doesn't work!

Since you are female make sure you pull your own weight and don't let the men do all the work.
