I had this problem about 2 yrs ago with the same cat and it was such a nightmare. I had to put plastic all around the house and it took some time for the problem to stop. The latest episode started when I left my bedroom door closed and the cat was inside and wasn't able to use her basket and now it's urinating on the couch WHAT CAN I DO TO STOP THIS (i have tried sprays, don't work) because I think this time I may have to get rede of the cat and don't want to do that for I've had this cat for almost 10yrs. Any advice would be great.

Have you taken the cat to the vet to make sure this is not a medical problem..the cat could have a bladder or uninary tract infection. Inapproprate urination is a symptom of this.

The most common reason cats stop using the litter pan correctly is due to a urinary tract infection. Has the vet run a test yet? Very important to do so. If all is normal, then behavioral issues need to be dealt with. Confinement, changing pans and changing litter types often work. Adding extra litter pans. Lower in height pans for older cats with arthritis is a good idea.

I will assume your cat is spayed. If not that is a territorial marking issue. It is also possible that our cat may have had a litter before being spayed which can be a contributing factor.

Be aware if you get rid of your cat, it will be very unlikely to be adopted. Few will want an older cat.

You need to treat all the areas she has urinated on, as she will return to the scene of the 'crime'. I have posted a link that may assist you.

Try and examine what may have introduced a level of stress for this cat, as urine marking is often a sign of stress. Your vet can prescribe a tranquilizer (think kitty Prozac) that may calm her down.

It may need to be spayed or neutered. If that isn't the case then you can spray it with water whenever you see it doing it or take it and place it in it's litter box.And when it does go in it's litter box give it a treat.
