It's useful if a person doesn't actually answer the question and just puts their opinion, when the opinion isn't called for in the context of the question.

It's also useful when people are saying nasty things, as well as reporting them for abuse.

I don't think that it serves a useful purpose. A guideline, perhaps, for the asker to determine a best answer? Maybe, but I don't see a lot of askers relying upon someone else's opinion to make their own decisions. Plus, too many people just abuse it, they don't really apply it appropriately. The offensive and inappropriate answers deserve the thumbs down, but then the more reasonable response would be to flag the answerer for abuse, wouldn't it?

If anything, I think the application and rules of use for the thumbs-up and thumbs-down should be revised to match how it's actually being used vs. how it SHOULD be used. Does that make sense?

I find it handy for collapsing really long paste jobs, even the ones I have posted a few times. I don't think I ever pay much attention to the number of thumbs I recieve except to make rude comments about the thumb down freaks.

I like it, too. People abuse this format in general with all the hate filled questions and responses, so doing away with the thumbs up system is irrelevant to me.

A simple, well understood expression of yes or no , life or death, good or bad. Why get rid of a linguistic bridge? So many cultures and languages use this symbol that it maybe should be encouraged.

I'm the same...I usually only give thumbs up. But I do enjoy doing it.

I agree with you. It's senseless and useless.

What's not useful is a hindrance.
