I have a free stop at L.A (presumably L.A international) before flying to Samoa, so I thought I'd spend a couple of days here.

I would be looking at somewhere not too far away from the airport so that its easy to get back to. Im on a backpacking budget so I will try to stay in hostels and keep spending to a minimum!

Any ideas on what to do please?

Thanks

We were in LA for a few days in April. There's loads to do that won't cost you a penny.
First of all, public transport is slated there but we found it gret and so easy. You can get a metro pass for $3 a day and you can use it on all the buses.
You can pack in loads - Santa Monica, Venice Beach, Malibu and Beverley Hills we did in one day. All by bus as well plus you get to see other bits on the way. Hollywood Boulevard is definitely worth seeing. Walking along it there are the stars on the pavement, the Kodak Theatre, Grauman's Chinese Theatre where you can check out the famous hand and footprints.
If you do want to treat yourself, Universal Studios is within easy reach on the subway from Hollywood Boulevard.
It's a great place we really enjoyed our trip there!

You can get the Metro/Underground from LAX to Hollywood (get off at Hollywood and Highland and it brings you right out onto Hollywood Boulevard). North Hollywood stop is further up - near Universal Studios. From what I remember you need to change a couple of times, but there are clear easy maps in there!. Fares are really cheap, there's a list in the link.
We didn't go as far as LAX from Hollywood Boulevard but I'd would say it's a good half hour as in a taxi it took 40 minutes.

Oh man -- I know it's a short drive, but you must stop by New Port Beach at night ... ride the ferris wheel and soak in the ocean air. Grab a slice of pizza, and watch the beautiful waves crash under the moonlight with whoever you're with...

The morning after, go grab a bite at In-And-Out Burger, one of the best burgers you'll ever have in your life

Or go grab lunch at Canters ... excellent restaurant, have the best potato cakes anywhere around!

Go ahead and do the Hollywood thing -- check out the Mann's Chinese Theatre... and check out some vintage hollywood prints. Walk of fame, etc ...

If you're into art take the 110 N to North Hollywood (aka NOHO), Magnolia Blvd. where all the vintage and arts stores are

Los Feliz is also a pretty interesting neighborhood with cool indie venues for music of all sorts -- very bohemian. Has a place in my heart...

There's so much to do. Sometimes I miss L.A. ... I need to go back

I would not use LAX as your hub-it's too far out-especially if you want to go to see Hollywood. I lived there for three years and used bus transportation for two of those years. Sometimes it's reliable-sometimes it's not. Do not use cabs-they'll cost you a fortune. I agree that instead of staying near LAX, I'd stay near Venice Beach, as well. You're on a bus line which will take you to Santa Monica. Hollywood is worth seeing if you haven't seen too many sites before... but, honestly, it's kind of dirty and there's not that much to really enjoy. There is a nice shopping center there-if you like shopping, however. Santa Monica and Venice are better. And they're beachy and more California-y.

I also stayed in LA last summer for 2 days.
The first day we spent at Universal Studios. It was a lot of fun if you enjoy the shows and rides with the movie themes.
The second day we spent walking down by the Chinese Theatre and Kodak Theatre near the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It was really neat to be able to see all those famous names and handprints in the cement.

i would stay at the hostel on 2nd street in Santa Monica, i forgot whats the name. from there u can walk around Santa Monica and Venice. check out Hollywood blvd its only good for a few blocks and kinda overrated, its mostly an underdeveloped place after a few blocks. Beverly hills is alright to check out, Colorado blvd in Pasadena, and melrose ave. also, Beverly center, the grove/farmers market. the fare for the MTA bus is raised from $3 to $5 all day pass and will increase in the yrs to come. right now its still $1.25 one way.

Well you should go to Centry City it is a really cool mall, or you should go to the Grove its also a cool mall. You can even go to Robertson and Beverly Drive Dr. there are a lot of movie stars the only problem is that it is close to hollywood which maybe a be a little far from where you are.

Well if you're on a tight budget, I would just recommend walking around Melrose Ave, in Hollywood, and then maybe go to Venice Beach or something. Just don't get your hopes up about LA.

Rent inline skates and cruise Venice Beach... drive up to the Hollywood sign with a picnic lunch and enjoy the view... go to a Dodger game, and be sure to have a Dodger Dog... go to Beverly Hills and cruise through all the designer boutiques on Rodeo Drive pretending to be a rich Australian rock star... go to Olvera Street for tacos and cervesa... hit the clubs in West Hollywood late night. Cheers!
