JEn,

There ae several verses that speak of "salt". In Luke 14:34-35 we read, "Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?

35It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear."

Christians are supposed to be the salt of the earth. This does not mean we are the "preservative of the earth." Salt always
pictures judgment. In the Old Testament all the burnt offerings were salted with salt. The animals used for burnt offerings were rams, bulls, etc. They were picturing the Lord Jesus (Lamb of God). Christ endured eternal damnation on behalf of all those who He came to save. Remember, Lots wife. She was turned into a pillar of salt when she turned around to look at Sodom and Gomorrah. She was not saved and judgment came upon her.

Matthew 5:13 - 16. 13 "You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trodden under foot by men. 14 "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. 15 Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

the last verse gives the meaning. It's basically saying to stay strong in your faith and be a good example to others.

Matthew 5:13
You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.

When Jesus said we ( the disciples) were the "salt of the Earth:, He meant that the disciples were the seasoning, the flavor in culture on Earth. Basically, the disciples and us are SUPPOSED to be righteous in society, in general (hence the "Earth") so that when others look around the society tin which they live, we disciples of God stand out as being "special" and "desirable" and they are drawn to that specialness of the disciples and then to Christ.

But when we leave God, what use do we have of drawing people to Him? We can't become rightous again without God.

The primary use of salt is used to strengthen the flavor of other ingredients, similarly Christians ought to be pillars of strength and hope to the world we are living in now, where there is so much of negativity and hopelessness, our very presence should change other peoples circumstances.

Matthew 5:13 “YOU are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its strength, how will its saltness be restored? It is no longer usable for anything but to be thrown outside to be trampled on by men.

Salt in ancient times was a preservative (paralled with knowledge)... if the "salt" loses its strength, that means your knowledge is scanty. You must use what you learn in your own life & share it with others.
