We are going to have a draft so we can police Iraq? If it comes down to that, I wonder how many people will move out of America. I think Bush has seriously gone mad now if he is willing to pitch ideas like this,

Army's number have been down for years now, and now there looking for 80% new troop turn over a year. I joined the Army in 2003, I ended up breaking my foot in two places and my leg, other wise I would be glad to be over there. I don't discount any of our soilders EVER! I'm a born and raised American! But a draft for Iraq, would be breathtaking. Now a mother I shouldn't have be shipped out against will to risk IED everyday. If it was a ww2 that is a totally differnt story and I would fight with honer, but it's not it's power trip on Bushes part and our troops are the one suffering.

Hey John, thanks for the tip I'm fully aware that the draft has been brought of several times, but now that commanding military officals are brining it up, it is rather alarming!

Well there Mike, thanks for your duty, deff got the hint your a Marine. But my friend I'm not crying. I have friends in recon that have been over there, my friend shot 3 times in Iraq, that what lacing those boots up every day is about. I got it! Like I said I'm not scared to be over ther, no my boyfriend is not in the service but I think you and everyone knows Iraq is going no where expect more soilders dying. And the thought of a draft to police Iraq it out of this world, thats the point I'm trying to make that it's getting that serious, and something should be done, and thinking about sending more Americans over this is not the answer.

A couple of comments - people who leave the USA to avoid military duty, I say good riddance. If you are unwilling to serve & support the USA, Live in Iraq, Iran, Mexico or many nations without our freedoms & luxuries.
No Bush official has ever said anything about drafting people.
They have said it is on the table, it always has been in US & used a few times. Many in WWI & WWII were not happy with the draft. A recent Lt General stated he wanted the draft but it is not his decision. The Security Council says President Bush prefers a volunteer Army as does my son, an Army Officer. Losers in Army against their will are not good at watching fellow soldier's backs.
The Army enlistment was 2% over what they had goaled in July at 10,000 soldiers. They had 2 off months with enlistments & the liberal media made it sound like a national emergency. The have met 10 out of 12 months goals.

There is nothing alarming about this. They evaluate the draft all the time. Every year atleast. Democrats submit a bill for it every year and it fails.
The Army has not been short on people. There was dry spell for two quarters, but recruitment is exceeding its goals, and retention has never been down.
Currently, there is no need for the draft. If something major happens, say China wants to fight, then a draft might be necessary. Its better to have the plans in place an not need them then not have the plans and need them.
Its amazing how one little word puts everyone into a panic.

First off, Bush is NOT the one who supports or brings up the draft. It was originally brought up by an anti war democrat because he says it would make more people turn against the war. A general recently said it was worth looking at but that is all.
It is just something to throw around to panic people for no good reason plus they like to have something to blame on Bush even though he isnt the one pushing or supporting it.

Every now and then, a number of pundits theorise and discuss the possibilities of a new draft happening soon, but everyone with a clear head knows it won't happen. Not for policing these wars in the Middle East, at least. The public doesn't have the stomach for a draft.

Why do you care?....We will never draft women. Don't tell me, "But I really love my boy friend and I worry that my brother will get drafted." Get over it. You don't really care. You just pretend that you do, so you can gain some sense of self-worth. So shut up and quit crying. I don't fully support this war, but if our country calls upon us, it's our duty to answer. Not.."Well, I don't like Bush, or I don't agree with this war." You live in this country which is truly a virtual paradise, don't you? Then earn it. Nothing is truly free. That is our price for living in such a wonderful country. We don't always get to be in full agreement with our leaders, but we do have to do our part when called to duty. Otherwise....Get out of this country...And if people move....then good....then didn't truly belong here anyways. By the way, I was Marine Corps Infantry for 5 yrs and I did my part.
Semper Fidelis,
Mikey

This war (war on terror) isnt against a enemy driven by politics or ideals, but by religion, by his God. Such an enemy will not negotiate or surrender. They are after our utter destruction. It doesnt matter where we fight; Iraq, Afgahnistan, the Phillipines, etc. We need to be willing to fight the enemy where ever he hides no matter the cost. This is a war for our survival, and if a draft needs to be in place to ensure that we have soldiers to fight, so be it. This is a notice to all you cowards out there: IF YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO FIGHT AND DIE FOR THIS COUNRY, LEAVE NOW. FLEEING THE WAR WILL ONLY PROLONG THE TIME BEFORE THE TERRORISTS KILL YOU.

If you haven't been paying attention, George Bush did not propose a new draft, one of his advisors did. General Lute has no political ax to grind, his concern is for the military and the mission.
Of course, the draft is old, old news for those paying attention. Democrat Charlie Rangel was proposing a new draft months ago. Perhaps you should make your concerns know to him and the democrats supporting him.
So go back to the drawing board and rewrite your question with the truth as your guide.
Military people talking about a draft should not be alarming. It has to be put back in place by the Congress.

I totally agree with Steubs, but I also think that if all families begin to see themselves affected by the war due to the draft then it would make them think not twice but just once who they are supporting and and this so called war in Iraq would come to an end immediately.
I have 2 boys in the military and yes they are volunteers. But, if this war is truly to defend our country, then WHY should only volunteers be fighting to defend this great land.
Everyone should! Especially the governments families who really believe they are doing the right thing.
This will never happen, but if it did, there would be no more wars, period!

no its not fair but i don't think its going to happen. I think that the draft is stupid altogether. If nobobdy is joining the army then that means that you dont have the majority of your country's suppport so you should pull out. I also hate the age of the draft. Why is it i can go to war and die for my country even against my will at 18, but can't legally take a drink of a beer until 3 years later.

We need a draft so that everyone has to serve. Our youth are hanging around shopping malls trying to be suburban "gangstas" they could be doing something useful.
I for one am sick of adlecent ChickenHawks who think they know something. Draft every 18 year old. You don't vote if you didn't serve.
