1] two armchairs in same color or print with same colors in it
2] two end tables - I prefer the ones with storage and a door or drawers. I very rarely use my coffee table, but end tables are used every day
3] two table lamps, or standing lamps
4] one or two sets of shelves [ try to match end table wood ]- on either side of fireplace, or under window - for books, CDs, DVDs
5] throw pillows that mix or match nicely with walls, furniture colors - get six or eight for sofa, chairs
6] a nice area rug in furniture, wall colors
7] framed photos on fireplace, or on top of shelves
8] frame all art, mirrors in same color and material - oak/walnut, brass/chrome, colored enamel
9] small accessories in wall or furniture colors for candles, vases, flowerpot[s] , ornaments

You don't mention how much money, if any, you have to spend. You probably need more seating, tables, lamps, pictures, pillows, and accessories. If you don't have much money go to rummage sales or used furniture stores. Pillows are easy to make and only take a small amount of material. I'm sure you have family photos. You can buy cheap frames at the Dollar store - buying all the same kind to make a united statement. Then just look around and see what you already have. A pretty bowl to set on a table. Some candles to put on the mantel of your firelplace. Do you collect anything you would like to display? Have fun. Just pick out things your like and will enjoy.

well personally i would start with a coffee table and/or a side table. potted plants always make a room look more like a home...warm and inviting. adding pictures to the walls is always helpful although since it's an apartment you might want to check with your landlord about any restrictions on nailing or screwing into the wall. you can also add throw pillows on your sofa to pull certain colors together and even add a throw rug. if your fireplace has a mantle, a freestanding clock or candles are always a nice touch.

good luck and have fun! :)
