Try a princess party in your backyard. You could have a a pinata and play games involving princesses. Or, you could always do chuck e cheese or an inflatable. That always works.

I've thought about doing a "summer" party for my kids (they're 3 and 4) since their birthdays are in Nov. and Dec. Some ideas that I had were allowing the kids to use sidewalk chalk and draw everywhere on your patio (if you have one), having many "kiddie" pools set up all over the yard, sprinklers turned on so they can run through them, and an enclosed trampoline. Tell everyone to bring a towel and dry clothes and come in their bathing suits. Provide suckers for them to eat while playing and waiting on food. Try looking at Wal-Mart in the party section for many party favors to pass out to the kids. I would use a princess theme and allow your daughter to be the princess (let her wear a tiara the whole time). If all of the guests are going to be girls, you could even have a dress-up party after they all get clean and dry...and possibly a sleepover. You could paint their fingernails and put make-up on them. For food, I have found that hot dogs and hamburgers on the grill with mac-n-cheese are their favorites (and less expensive). Kool Aid, chips, birthday cake and you're good to go.

Madeline. There's something for her at partycity.com. There you'll find the whole thing. It has piniatta, goody bags, party ideas, plates, napkins, invites. Now for the cake, I suggest you go down to your local Stop and Shop or bakery and have them put a picture of Madeline on a sheet cake and then have them put "Madeline says: Happy 4th Birthday (Insert Child's Name)"And on partycity.com, there will be the Madeline dress and hat for girls: it makes a fabulous Halloween Costume or she could wear it at the party. Or both.

Our adult daughters have no recall of the efforts we made for their birthdays as small children. I doubt yours will either.

I think a princess party is nice, but postpone most of your energy until age six or seven when their memories will lead to appreciation in later years.

Have a tea party:

Have everyone come in a dress or skirt and bring a stuffed animal. Then you could eat little sandwitches for lunch with cookies and punch. It would be really fun!
