Housebreak the dog properly.

Take him out frequently. If he doesn't do all of his business, he doesn't get house privileges- either he stays out until he goes or he gets crated until he gets taken out again. This is really fool proof- it can take a lot of patience though. You may end up crating him a lot until he gets the hang of it. Of course, praise and reward him when he goes outside.

I've said all this assuming he wasn't house broken in the first place. If he was and he started this all of a sudden, he may be sick and need to be seen by the vet.

The other 2 answers are right on target, but just to add, make sure you clean the poop up very well to erase the scent so your dog can't smell it.. After you pick it up, use a solution of warm water and amonia to eliminate the scent.. When he does do it in the house, bring him over to it and say in a stern voice, "No Bad (name)" then take him outside.. You can pick up the poop and put it outside where your dog does go so the scent is there and can train him where it's ok to go... Put up a gate to block him from the living room until you do train him on where he can go. It takes time and patience, but he'll get the hang of it...

Keep the dog away from the living room. Feed her on schedule. Dogs only poop fairly soon after they eat. so if you feed her at 9am then wait 30 min and she will go to the bathroom. and be done until next mean. Walk the dog more often.

With adult dogs I have had success crate training them along with getting them on a feeding and potty break schedule. Walking a dog stimulates their digestive system so you may want to include this in your routine to ensure she goes. Providing there is not a health issue this should help get your dog back in the good graces of your MOM in no time.

The dog needs to be kept on a schedule. When your dog is done eating, take him out to the bathroom to potty about 15 minutes after he is done eating. When you guys are away, do not let him have free run of the hosue. Get a crate and crate train him.

Crate training is explained here:

Get an enzymatic cleaner to clean the spots where he's gone. Pay close attention to your dog; don't let him have free run of the house. Reward him with amazing treats when he goes outside, and do not punish him for making a mistake - after all, it's you that's in charge of being aware of his needs, right?

Train him. Your vet will have some free literature to do this or you can buy a book. There's too much to know about housebreaking for me to give you a walkthrough here and just getting the bare basics probably won't help.

You have to teach and train your dog where to go when he wants to go. Thats your responsibility!
