I bought one of those in Asda and found that it worked fine but was let down by little things like the quality of the remote etc.
I ended up changing it 6 months later and sold the original on E-bay for half what I paid for it.
Guess I should have bought a better (known brand) one in the first place.
PS if you can afford it, go for one with a hard drive, brillient.

If you have a Bargain Clearance store near you go there. They belong to Argos and sell stuff that has been deleted for whatever reason from the catalogue (and stuff still in the catalogue that they have a surplus of). Prices can be ridiculously cheap. I think the cheapest DVD recorder I've seen there was £29.99. I got a £300 camcorder for £75!

I bought by far the cheapest DVD recorder on the market years ago, made by a company I've never heard of and it works fine! It was £30 at a time when most were about £200. It's still working great. I think with cheap things it's pot luck!

Cheap products are cheap for a reason - it's because they use poor quality components. That is one of life's inescapable facts.
You will notice this in the poor picture and sound from the player, the regular visits to the shop to get it repaired and the final frustration when you bin it and buy something decent.
You will hear people saying "Ooh, well, my DVD player made by Plinky Wibble that I bought from my local supermarket for three shillings and sixpence has a fantastic picture". Yes, but compared to what, exactly? They are usually the same people who think that a 15 year old Lada is fantastic to drive - simply because they have never driven a modern car (think about it...)
Remember, "Buy cheap, buy twice".

Some positive information on cheap DVD players is that they will play any DVD. I have a Sony one and it doesnt play home made DVDs or anything. Cheap DVD players are not made with the chips that dont allow some dvds to be played. I would go ahead and buy one.

In the beginning cheap recorders would only record onto expensive discs.
dvd-r / dvd + r are the cheapest discs.

I know someone who brought one of them and speaks badly of it, recording lengths, quality, remote and they really are unhappy with it. I have a Sony GX120 which although I am selling it really is a fabulous machine and was well worth the extra money.
