Because it's wrong..
It hurts people in every way, and doesn't do anything for you.
Seriously, what point does gossip serve?
Christians like me also count them as sins.

Oh...I believer there is some very poetic wisdom in Scripture about this...
that the tongue is like the bit in a horse's bridle, the helm that steers the boat... it sets the direction in our life...
And that it starts many a fire...
The smallest part of our body...but so powerful in all it does in our life. Yeah...that is definitly one of the things we all have a problem with (believer or non-believer).
And as no good comes from lying or gossiping...that would be one of the main reasons God doesn't give you brownie points for being the town gossip.

Because Satan is using things like that to ruin our witness or keep people from becoming a Christian. Satan knows how we love to gossip, so he uses it to fight Christianity.

Can't control their tongues. Maybe they don't think before hand about the consequnces whih lay ahead of them.

the same reason ppl have problem with other sins it is no different then any sin everyone has sins..
