I don't know why its never on the label. Thats a good question, it should be. Your average corporate beer (Bud, Miller etc.) is 5.2 percent alcohol, except for the pee water they sell in grocery stores, which is 3.2. A good microbrew can be anywhere from 5.2 to 9%. Most are on the higher end, especially the dark beers. The summer seasonals will be lower.

There is no "average" American beer. However most of the godawful watered down Lager-style beverage that Budweiser et. al. sell as beer is about 4% alcohol by volume.
Remember that alcohol has a specific gravity of .8 and is less dense than water. So 4% by volume is 3.2% by weight.
"Real" beer is 3.5 % to 9% alcohol.

For the 3.2% states (about 15), then its 3.2%
For everywhere else, domestic stuff like Bud, Coors, etc. are about 4.5%. All of them are pretty much that.
For the imported beers and microbrews, it's about 5.2%. But, it widely varies anywhere from 4.5% to 8%.
