I thought Islam was a religion of Peace?

Can't people criticize it without risking violence?

Sorry to say I have not heard of the lady. I'll look at her web-site shortly but as to her receiving an honour, I don;t know. What is the criteria? Surely not just for writing an anti-Islam book?
Of course her life should not be threatened and I have yet to see any Muslim putting forward a good reason for such threats, at least ones that are acceptable to a civilised society.

Historically Islam has been a violent religion and it is living up to that image in our time. How Muslims can say that Islam is a religion of peace is an indication of ignorance both of the past and the present or it is an attempt at deception.

The UK does not honour people for writing against Islam.

The UK does, however, honour people who, for instance, are the leading literary figures of their time. It is possible that Miss Nasreen does not fall into that category.

I agree she should be. But you're up against the pro-Arab politics in the UK. Look what happened when this government was daft enough to honour Salman Rushdie - whose book, I might say, was definitely not a piece of commendable literature.

If you want to know about Islam, look at Islam, not Muslims. Something beautiful can be misused, and if you look at the person who misused it you don't see the beauty.
Why should someone be honoured for writing against a religion? I know society now prides itself on 'freedom on speech' and now 'freedom to criticise/offend' but I find this a little unsettling. Islam is not a religion of compulsion - but it does teach the morals and ethics that all religions do, and that society used to have. Since when did this 'freedom' to offend people become more important than a society based on basic morals - for example to respect each other and not hurt each other? No, it's not right to try and hurt this woman physically, but nor is it right to write against a religion who many people hold close to their hearts, simply to exercise this 'freedom to offend'.

A strange thing. Muslims say Islam is peaceful. But they attack people who criticize fundametalist Islam. And say they invented logics...

A quote on the site of this courageous lady:
"Nature says women are human beings, men have made religions to deny it. Nature says women are human beings, men cry out NO!"

As you can read on her site she has already many awards.

Hope everybody reads more on this site and tell everybody you know about this lady.

Its courage Brits traditionally admire. Unfortunately there is this silly celebrity culture which means she wouldn't be a household name unless she was a footballers wife, witty person, Big Brother contestant, or other media personality - a really sad state of affairs; this celebrity culture seems to have taken over in the last 10 years - its crazy. Brave people and real contributors don't get the recognition they used to. (In my day lad, a house cost 15 pounds; yer could buy 10 pints of best bitter for a penny...)
