Sadists get sexual pleasure out of hurting or humiliating someone else.
Masochists get sexual pleasure out of being hurt or humiliated by someone else.
This is kind of a game for some people, and the pain usually doesn't involve serious injuries.

At a surface appraisal sadism is about hurting another but it is a mere palimpsest, a thin veil concealing the intense and rooted love that exists beneath. It is just a mere deviant vehicle by which to express that love. I agree with the posters who declared that alot of sadomasochistic urges and practices derive from the faith. Cistercian Monks during the Middle Ages and Renaissance would actually practice self flagelation to bring them closer to God as do Suffi Monks in Islam. Pain and the numinous are often inextricably connected. Stigmata, the passions of the Christ etc etc

As far as I'm aware it's no more a sexual illness than any other fetishes, as long as you're with a consenting adult, and use a safe word.

If you're masochistic then you like pain on yourself and if you're sadistic you like causing harm on others. So, sexual masochists like hurting themselves or having someone else them sexually.
