My cat has ceased to groom and even though she is a short haired cat, is getting matted. She has all her shots and seems to be otherwise healthy. Can anyone tell me what might be wrong?

Incidentally and not to confuse the issue, this cat has many features of human autism. She hates to be touched, can't manage any kind of noise like dishes being moved, etc. She is very aloof and in her own little world. The only time she shows any affection is when she is waiting for her food.

I see this type of situation fairly often. Most of the time, the decreased grooming goes along with illness, old age and/or obesity. The cats either don't feel well enough to groom, no longer care or are too fat to groom themselves properly. I would recommend that you have your vet examine your cat to rule out any medical reasons. If your cat will allow it, most of the mats caused by decreased grooming in short-haired cats can be combed out and do not require shaving. Use a wide-tooth metal comb and work at combing the mats out. It's actually fairly easy once you master the technique of starting at the base on the cranial side of the mat and using very short strokes to gradually remove the matted hair (which is made up of all the old hair that has fallen out).

A cat stopping grooming is a major sign of illness. Get the animal to a vet before it is too late. She could have something up her nose or worse. Cats, like people, even with shots get sick GO TO THE VET

And as far as the personality features, that is something you have to accept. Cats can be independent and standoffish but your cat is SICK.

Any time a cat stops grooming itself it is sick. She needs to go to the vet.

I know, same here. Have you considered she might be pregnant? My cat is an out door cat and the one thing she hate s the sound of a plastic bag. My mom jokes that its the new wtyle to have spiky fur, but I don't know. You should consult your vet.
