I am flying to PA to surprise him. My question is what can I buy for his wife, who is going to be 22 this month also. I've never met her, and I don't know what she likes, since I am surprising my son and her too, I don't have anyone to ask except Yahoo experts like you. I am also going to meet my new granddaughter. ( I know what to get her!) Help!

My son's birthday is on the 16th and his wife's birthday is the on the 22nd. This is why I am in a rush to get ideas. I'm flying on the 16th. I appreciate all ideas.

Do either of them drink coffee or like a specific restaurant that's also in your area? You could get gift certificates to those places, or also popular stores like Target or department stores. I think it would be sweet to present your new daughter-in-law with some flowers too-and maybe the two of you should have a girl's day while you're there to get a manicure/pedicure together. Does your son have a weakness for video games? Does he work out? Play basketball? Do you know if she likes a particular nature store or does she knit or rollerblade? Gift certificates aren't impersonal, in my opinion. Hope this helps!

Well it's always a good idea to give a person you don't know that well money or a gift card. That is something that they can use right or maybe something that has to do with house work like a cookbook or a blender but, since they have a daughter they probably already have that stuff. So if you don't like those options how about something just 4 her like jewelry, a lotion, even a gift basket with spa stuff could work too. Also don't forget a card that is a definite w/ every gift

Why are you getting her a gift if it is HIS birthday? If there is a reason, such as an anniversary or it is her birthday, too, something thoughtful for their home together could be a nice gift that they both could use, and think of you when they use. If that is not a good option, maybe you could bring her something unique from your hometown--perhaps there is a unique brewery or winery that you could take spirits from...or if a certain candy/baked good is famous there, then take that on the trip with you. If you're driving, even something like a cookbook that you write a nice message in and a basket of veggies/fruits from your garden could be a different, and not too expensive a solution.

surprising people is always tricky... be careful, you might be intruding...i suggest you come with a house gift instead. kids this young don't have all the fun stuff! you will make a great impression. then, take her out shopping for something she likes. you will get a chance to know her this way, and the next set of gift giving will be a breeze!

This is a bad idea! You may well be the one to get a surprise. At the very least clear the visit w/ your daughter-in-law.
