You can sit outside in a beer garden and smoke with your pint, but you won't be able to smoke inside any public building.

As far as I'm aware you can smoke anywhere where there are no four walls surrounding you, (but you can in your own private property). But, recently I heard that someone was fined for smoking at a bus stop, which clearly does not have four walls!

You can happily have a smoke with your pint outside, but if your coming over in December, I'd recommend some very chunky jumpers, gloves, a hat and a scarf! And maybe a little parasol hat to protect your cigarette from the rain! I haven't heard whether the death penalty might become effective, but you may get some 'death looks' if you try and smoke in a public place.
It's no big deal, you just have to be outside a bit more.

Here's a link to a website with better information! It's for the smoking ban that became effective in Wales in April, but I imagine it's the same for England and Scotland (couldn't find an appropriate website for those - sorry). http://www.smokingbanwales.co.uk/english/

Ah Man, we're all human beings under a death penalty sentence don't you know? Now regarding the smoking ban, indeed, we can't smoke in pubs anymore in England. The penalty is being kicked out, not hanged or having our head chopped off with an axe, things have gone soft since Henry the 8th. Now pubs smell of fart and sweat instead of smoke so I don't know if the atmosphere is not more lethal. Anyway welcome to England, and we can hae a smoke at the back door no probs :-)

Yes John, but only in an outside designated area. Lots of pubs have designed heated outdoor areas for customers to smoke with their pint of excellent English beer.

No you will not be executed if you breach the rules. I think the maximum for a first offence is a fine of £60 (about $110).

I am one of those horrible ex-smokers, the difference is that I sympathise.

Smokers have always had the death penalty for smoking and often gave the same to innocent passive smokers.

You will get fined if you smoke on licenced premises so don't.

By the way I am a smoker too.

I just can't believe how crazy this has all gotten. I agree with the guy who mentioned the dangers of car pollution and yet all the people bitching about smoking and clean air aren't walking anywhere. It's discrimination. What makes a non-smoker so special? Why don't they outlaw McDonald's for fat people? And don't tell me they aren't hurting anyone else, look at how many Happy Meals they feed their plump little children! Same discrimination and health risk.

No you can't - you will be hung drawn and quartered in the Tower of London by Ravens wearing stockings and suspenders where you will go on to live a frutiful afterlife in Zion surrounded by virgins !

(You can still smoke AT most pubs but it will be outside in the street/beer garden under big corporate umbrellas plastered with beer logos etc)

Yes sadly you will need to have your cig and pint in the beer garden, or on the street.
As for the death penalty, or heavy fine they haven't caught on to that one yet, but no doubt there are plenty of the untouchable non smokers who will comment saying that they should introduce it.

The USA has the lowest number of smokers per capita in the developed world and lowest life expectancy in the developed world......

Anyway the secret is to find a pub with a beer garden

The air may be cleaner indoors but it sure stinks outside pubs and shops. I think it's a bit much to ban smoking and yes you'll have to go outside with the rest of the out casts. sorry.
