Basically, you should shift when the engine revs are getting high. There is a certain point when the power, or rpm's are more than needed. Practice will get you adjusted to the sounds. Till then, shift from first at about 15 mph or 3k rpms, from second at about 25mph, and from 3rs when you are at cruising spped. Downshift as you slow down and for going up hills and down steep hills.

For average acceleration, a good point would be between 3,000 and 3,500 rpm. For better milage though, keep shift points lower (under 2,500rpm.)
Do not exceed the red line of the engine under any circumstances!! Assuming you have a tach, this would be the area marked in red. With an area marked in yellow right before it that signifies caution. On an older vehicle, I wouldn't push it much past 4,000 rpm in most cases.
generally, you just want to make sure that you have the engine turning fast enough for it not to be in a strain (lugging), but not faster than necessary. (wasting fuel)

you really dont shift at particular road or engine speed. what you do is accelerate normally, and when the engine flattens out, that is when you shift. where that happens depends on how much throttle pressure you are using.
