Hi. Sometimes this is their way of "cooling themselfs off". No it is not a sign of illness...but it definately could be a sign that she is indeed hot.

Hello,
This may not be the case (as you mentioned he was not sick) but I think I should mention it, anyhow. Our cat used to stick his tongue out all the time. It was rather cute but the cause wasn't. He had a mouth infection and for some reason sticking his tongue out helped. Try and catch a butchers when he yawns and see if it all looks OK. Stinky breath is another sign.
FYI he had the teeth around the infection removed and now is loads better and doesn't do it so much.

This is their ONLY way of sweating, just like a dog. If your cat is doing this a LOT--get him/her into a cooler area and I'm sure that you'll find the cat will stop doing this as soon as he/she cools down. Also, try to get him/her to drink more water. Best of luck with this---but YES, your cat is HOT!

I always thought it was a sign of contentment. I've seem some cats just lying around and relaxing and their tongue is a little out, I think it's cute. Now reading all these other answers, makes me wonder, maybe they do forget to put their tongue back in the mouth, anyways they are content after washing themselves, and all is okay.

A cat like other animals (snakes and lizards) has what is known as a jacobsons organ. They use it to help smell and identify other animals and varying chemicals. They do this by raising their upper lip and sticking out the tongue. It's natural and nothing to worry about.

There's a behavior many animals, including cats, do called "flehmening" -- it's a specialzed way of detecting scents through something called the Jacobson's Organ in the mouth.

It is very funny to see, but often I see my cat do it after she has meowed or sniffed something. When cats smell they open their mouthes a bit to aide their sense of smell. And my cat leaves her tongue out after she meows, I figure it is cuz she isnt aware of it.

I'm not sure, but I saw my cat grooming himself and he just left his tongue sticking out. Maybe he's airing his tongue out? Or maybe he just doesn't like the taste of the cat hair he collected on his tongue.

My cat did this & it turned out she had an abcessed tooth. You may want to take her in for a dental check just in case.
