will i be detained if i go to canada with out a passport or birth certificate even if its only for a couple hours?

You don't need a passport to go to Canada, you need a birth certificate and/or drivers license as a form of photo ID. The new passport requirement law doesn't come into affect until 2008.

If you mean going across illegally ... well, yeah they wouldn't be too happy about that.

Getting into Canada is not the problem, but getting back might be.
Check the websites about passports. I think if you travel by car you can still travel without passport.

They will not let you into canda so dont worry about getting back into the us.
