I know there is AA, and I have been to it in the past...
but I think I am truly and alcoholic and I was wondering... how can I get help and stop? I really want to, it's ruining my whole life. But I have been down the AA road, and I was wondering if anyone else had quit drinking and how had the accomplished it?

Thanks for the help...

Only you can answer the question as far as excessive amounts. Most people do not understand the true meaning of alcoholism. Through AA I learned the true meaning and that made a difference for me. An alcoholic can go several days without drinking. I always thought it meant someone who drank around the clock, day in and day out. It doesn't. I can't say one way or the other if you drink excessively nor if you are or are not an alcoholic; no one can determine that but you. The fact that you want help is a major step. One thing I know about AA is that it is a comfort zone. Even if you slip (drink) no one will judge you. They are there to help and support you. The main thing about AA is to keep going back no matter what. One of our members has been sober 16 years. Before AA she was on disability for alcoholism; she was that bad. Now she has a college degree, a house, a car, and most importantly, a life.

Find a sponsor; someone who will listen and be there when you need them most. They have been through it all and no one can understand the power of alcohol better than an alcoholic.

I wish you all the best; it is NOT easy but there are people out there who have been and are going through the same things you are. Give AA another try and keep going back no matter what :-)

If you think the amount of alcohol you are consuming is ruining your life, then, yes, it is excessive. If you really want to stop and you didn't like AA, I would suggest a book called Allen Carr's EasyWay to Control Alcohol. I read the Allen Carr's EasyWay to quit Smoking and it is amazing and effective (I had tried EVERY other method without success), so I want to assume that the book on alcohol is equally useful. They also have clinics and seminars available. Start with the book, it is a tiny investment in something that can turn your life around forever. Good Luck and congrats on the first step!

Yeah, that's an excessive amount of beer. To stop drinking all you have to do is NOT DO IT. It's that simple. You don't need the alcohol. It is a deadly poison that is able to cross the blood brain barrier and it paralyzes brain cells. Your brain being paralyzed is that "high" feeling. It's actually your brain trying to tell you to stop what you're doing, but most people who drink for entertainment think that the high feeling is what you want.

So if you really want to quit, then just do it. Quit. You don't need a group of dry-drunks trying to tell you that alcoholism is a disease - it isn't, it's a personality disorder. So if you tell yourself you don't want it or need it, you won't have the desire for it. Don't make it more complicated than it is.

Your liver will not die from alcohol poisoning. Your body will not get alcohol poisoning & you will not get brain damage. YOu will feel better & live a longer healthier life. You will also be happier, you won't smell like alcohol & people will enjoy being around you. You also will not be putting your self and others in danger (drunk driving, becoming violent etc..). You will save money & it will be easier for you to find employment. Congratulations on quitting drinking. That is a hard habit to break!! Stick with it, it will be worth it in the long run.

I am a recovering alcoholic myself. I just asked God to help me and I quit 4 years ago and have not had a craving or touched it since. I drank nightly and too much. At first it was HARD but now its easier. I also quit smoking coold turkey and that is so so hard. I also hav not smoked in 4 years. I crave it every night I lay down to go to sleep. But again I did it and do it daily every day with God's help.

You will quit when you really want to. if you went to AA and it disn't work you were obviously not ready to make that committmnet. try again and again....
Take a huge step out of yourself and look back, what is making you drink, and what in your life is worth stopping for???

Only you know the answers.

I know AA has been very helpful to LOTS of people.
It makes me wonder what about the program you didn't like. If you can figure out what that is, then you'll have a lead. Dig deeper and deeper down that path. Either you'll end up at peace with something like AA, or you'll find something better than AA.

Try the book, The Universal 12-Step Program (link below). It uses Rational Emotive Behavorial Therapy (REBT). After completing the exercises at the end of each chapter, you will begin to see yourself from a rational perspective and that will help motivate you in the direction you want to take.

I found a copy at my local library.
