There are usually used furniture stores close to a campus so that they rebuy and resell to the students on a regular basis. There may be a place where students post for sale things but that would have been when they moved out last semester. Check out yardsales and bid on the last day when they really want to get rid of their stuff. Stores that "rent" to buy furniture usually have other stores that will sell their furniture and you can really get some good deals for pretty nice furniture. If you have that paper that comes once a week with for sale stuff-just call and go look-same with your daily paper. Check out laundrymats or anyplace someone can post things for sale. Be careful and go in a group when you go to strange place. Oh and hospitals often have that type of bulletin board. They may be helpful. We just dropped my nephew off at his dorm yesterday and they provide the bed, desk, chest of drawers and have limits on size for a fridge, microwave, phone, etc. We went to Marshalls and WalMart for bedding, small fridge, and Home Depot for the microwave, WM had a purple phone for $5 which my sister kept and gave him her good one. Just shop the discount stores and look for sturdy because she will get rid of it later. There is no room in dorm rooms. If she's getting an apartment then it's up to your budget.

Well I would say a yard sale is the perfect place to look, but Target has also come out with it's line of dorm room furniture and decor. It's priced cheap for a college student's budget.

Yard sales are extremely good during this time of the year. I know a student's mother that bought all of her daughter's apt. furniture at a yard sale, and all she bought her was the new mattress for the bed. Check the classifieds of local newspapers. Last resort -- rent, but ask how many times it has been rented and to whom?

When I lived in NY 5 years ago, they had some great deals at the Salvation Army's furniture store located at 536 West 46th (between 10th and 11th) Street in Manhattan. They always had great furniture at VERY REASONABLE prices. Best of luck!

Salvation Army.
Check the paper for estate sales. Furniture is always being sold at those. I just sold a bedroom suit and a kitchen table and six chairs at our estate sale. We practically gave it away because we just wanted to get rid of it.

i would opt for buying used furniture... she can always turn around and sell it when she is done with it. two avenues you should take a look at is craigslist.org and freecycle.org. i'm not sure if freecycle is nationwide, but everything is free.... i've often seen offered beds with boxsprings and frames, dressers, mirrors, and various items. it would definitely be worth looking at! if you can't find anything to your liking... go to ikea. they have decent, but affordable furniture.

Craigslist.org

Not only can she get used furniture, when she graduates she can resell it on Craigslist.

And, it's a free service.

garage sales, fea markets, yard sales...........resale shops. If you look hard enough you can find some pretty decent stuff at great prices. Also try Walmart.com and IKEA.
