In my home, an originally Catholic family, we always called it Mass as in 'I'm going to mass', but we said things like 'That service wasn't too long', or 'the sunday service is quite pretty', or whatever. Service was more of a noun to describe what happened during mass, as opposed to a title?

Protestants have various kinds of "services". Catholics have The Mass, the central act of Christian worship, and the only act of worship given to us by Jesus Christ Himself. Catholics may also have various kinds of "services" such as a communion service, a penitential service, etc., but the Mass is as far beyond a mere "service" as heaven is beyond earth. In the Mass, Jesus Christ Himself becomes physically present to us. That doesn't occur in any kind of "service" designed by men.

We refer to it Mass, I never heard another Catholic say "service".

One of the definitions of the word "service" is a religious rite.

The Mass is a religious rite and, therefore, can be referred to as a service (as long as no disrespect is intended).

With love in Christ.

The service is by the people, for the church.
The sheep serve the shepherd only they don't think that far.

Huh? I thought it was the altar boys who 'serviced' the priests.
