Ok I'm not sure what it's called for an officer, so I just said enlisting. But I'm debating on whether or not to enlist or go to OCS. My reason for wanting to enlist is, I can keep enlisting (as in, serve a commitment, take a break, and do it again)... can I do that as an officer?

Officers don't Re-Up.

Once your initial commitment is up you continue to serve until you request to get out.

There are some programs that you can take part in that will increase you commitment. But there are no Re-up windows, no ETS Date.

Re-enlistment..be it as an officer or as enlisted..is not a "given" after a certain point in your career. After you finish your basic training and career training/orientation, you may be promoted a rank or so as a matter of course. By the end of your first three or four years, many other factors will come into play as to weather you will be eligable to re-enlist. The first will be if you have completed all the qualifications...in some brances that means continued career training, testing, participation in base and community event and the ratings you get on your yearly review. You will also be required to meet all PT (physical training and readiness) requirements as well as meeting your weight guidelines. You will only have so many tried to make your next rank and only so long to do it in. If you have not made your next rank in the allowed time frame, you will not be allowed to re-enlist. Your job can have something to do with it as well. Many positions in the military are being outsourced to civilians and that is leading to many career fields being phased out. If you are in a targeted field and refuse to cross train into a field that needs more bodies, you may be denied re-enlistment. And, if you have had any problems that have required command intervention or attention, your enlistment can be denied on those grounds. No matter which branch you choose or how you choose to serve..as enlisted or officer..you should be ready to continue working hard, giving 100% and never take it for granted that you will get rank. You will have to work for each bar, stripe or cluster and work hard.

When you accept a commission as an officer your serve at the pleasure of the President. You can only stop your term of service by making a voluntary request to resign your commission or have your service end dishonorably through court-martial or other administrative proceeding. Even when you retire, you are placed on the Retired List, but you still hold that commission and are subject to recall should the President require it.
Enlistments are done under contract and for a fixed term of service, which is renewed by entering into another contract. Officers don't usually resign their commission then try and get another commission years later.

You can't do that on either side of the house, enlisted or as an officer. Enlisted ranks re-enlist but there is no break. Officers remain as officers until they resign their commission.

Don't enlist. YOu will make a lot more money as an officer. If you have a college degree just go to OTS.

once you hit a certain rank as an officer you enlist for good, i forgot the exact word for it, but basically at a certain rank you sign a contract that says you are in until you can retire
