Having a note saying it was serviced x time ago is like buying a car with a note that says it was serviced x time ago. It means nothing because you don't know what has happened after that time.

You can get just about anything on a clarinet fixed for $150 (except maybe cracked wood). I had a full repad and service done an a Buffet R13 not a month ago for that amount. Ask your local service place what they charge for a repad and adjustment on a student clarinet. If you buy a used one, expect to spend that much on it right away.

Go on eBay and look for a Selmer Paris (not USA), Leblanc Paris or Noblet Paris, or Buffet R13 that the seller says "needs service" and see if you can't get that for about the same price as a working condition vito. Then get it serviced and you're playing with a professional quality instrument for way less than a student instrument. Don't worry if there's not a mouthpiece with it - that kills the eBay price but a clarinet mouthpiece is cheap in comparison to the price savings.

Rent the instrument first so that if your child ends up not liking it you arent stuck with an instrument. Several music stores rent to own. Vito, Selmer, Artley, Conn, Evette, and Yamaha all make good student models. You should be able to find a good instrument for less than $150. If you are buying used check to make sure that all the keys move and open and close correctly; check the pads to make sure they are there and arent missing pieces of the pad.

oK So the deal is if the kid wants to play for a month then rent it otherwise buy it now matter how expensive it is you will end up paying thesame amount in 4months that it would have cost to buy it!Also the ones you rent are beat to crap cause kid after kid rent, use, and abuse them so the renter instruments usually already always have problems when you first get them! Buying is the only way to go even if it has already been slightlty used on the internet! Good Luck :)

the best thing to do is rent instrunments because when you buy them online youre taking a chance and even thought they are cheap they could have major problems renting is the best becuase youre child might end up hating the clarinet. Also some schoools loan out instruments

One word....RENTAL!!!!!!! What if your child despises the clarinet? Then, you are stuck with an instrument that someone else could be enjoying. When I first started playing, on a vito, my parents rented. When it was obvious that I was in love, they bought it. Renting is not only safe, it's smart.
