I am as confused as you are. We are not mind readers. We never know if they are serious or not. But sometimes I take my chances, and answer the question in a comical way if it is really a stupid question.
Now I took your question seriously. Did I read you correctly??

There are people in Yahoo Answers that are naturally good, honest people, and then there are some in YA that aren't. Mostly the way to tell an honest answerer is they have a good percentage of "best answers" or they tend to come across as gentle and meek. Then you have the people who are very snide and make fun of you or your question.
Since YA doesn't kick out people for giving joking answers, you're always going to see them now and then. But, if you can cut through the masses to the people who really want to help, then it's worth it to continue asking questions or answering to the best of your ability.
Remember, there are people in the Yahoo population who have characteristics of the general population, and most of the general population doesn't care and tends to like poking fun at other people to make themselves feel superior. I wouldn't worry about those people.
I agree that the questions are generally handled the same way, since the population on-line is representative of what you'd find out on the street in the "real world".

Which questions?
I think it varies a lot.
"without prejudice"? not sure what you mean -- we all have prejudices, though we don't seem them that way, of course they're going to be assumed in our answers.
Maybe I don't get the point of this question -- can't you tell whether or not a given answerer was really trying?
BTW, not really answering the question (or insulting the asker) violate the Guidelines for this site and should be reported.

Personally I try to answer each question truthfully and in a helpful manner. I can tell by some answers though that the entire question was not read or thought about. I think we all bring our own prejudices into our answers though. I had a horrible Mother-in-Law and I am extremely sensitive to people who have MIL trouble; however I am afraid I bring my own experiences into it too much.
Great question.

I do my best to answer the question in a truthful, polite way, with as little prejudice as possible.
However, if the question is outright ridiculous, I'll sometimes make a wisecrack.

The answers tell the story. I should think they would want to express themselves to see just where their thoughts rank. I am surprised that I am on the same page with most comments. My answer is no I don't think they really care one way or the other .

Some people actually answer the questions truthfully if it is a subject they care about, others I think do it just to get points and to be heard. It's like a little kid trying to get your attention...

I think most people respond truthfully, but who is without prejudice?
I think the majority of the questions are sincere, although the trollbait questions are wearying.

Learn to tell the difference...not that difficult.
Some questions seem to just "ask" for stuppit answers.
