Limbo, while never an official doctrinal teaching of the Church, was a popular tradition that grew up within the Church in order to address the apparent conflict between (1) the statement of Christ that no-one can enter the kingdom without baptism, and (2) what we know about a just and merciful God, who would surely not send unbaptized but innocent babies to hell. The official teaching of the Church on this matter is simply that "we entrust such children to the mercy of God".
Limbo should not be confused with Purgatory, which is a core belief of Christianity and was absolutely accepted by all Christians until a few hundred years ago, when various founders of unauthorized manmade churches started rejecting core Christian beliefs that all Christians had accepted for the previous 1,500 years.

Limbo used to be the way good Christian people thought to get good non-Christian people into eternal bliss as they could not get them into heaven proper since only Christians can go there.
When His Holiness abolished the concept he gave formal recognition to the fact that eternity is NOT the same thing as a long time frame.
Limbo is not necessary as Jesus stands at the end of life in all His glory, saying to each human soul, "Come. Follow Me." Say yes, and you are His forever. Say no and He reluctantly accedes to your exercise of free will and lets you go....elsewhere.
And to the one who made merry with His Holiness' power, I say, "Read Matthew 16, 17-19." He's got the power. Jesus gave it to Peter and to ALL Peter's spiritual descendants, ie, their Holinesses. Like it or lump it, that's what Jesus wanted and we Catholics do try to do what He wanted as opposed to what Luther, Calvin, Eddy, Smith et al wanted.

Limbo would be like a place of rest until Christ returns to collect His own. The ones left behind will be judged by God.

When we leave this live we wait in out graves for Christ's return. That is the limbo. But if one kills themselves they go strait to hell, no waiting. The Bible says this and studies of life-after-death have shown that ones that killed themselves and where saved ALL claimed to go strait to a hell.

Limbo, purgatory, the waiting room, call it what you will, it is supposed to be the place that you contemplate your virtues and your sins before being allowed to move on.

As you know, after the first sin was committed, the test began.
We are in limbo right now. How we behave here, decides where our future lies.
