I know a person who was adopted at birth. This person is extremely overweight. Later on in life (30 years old) this person finally met their biological parents. Both of the parents and some of the family members were also overweight. There seems to be a pattern that overweight people come from the same families.

Yes. The gene hasn't been isolated yet, but cases such as your friend's have shown that a propensity to gain weight has a genetic factor. (It also has environmental and behavioral factors, it's a complicated problem.)

It used to be an advantage to store energy in times of famine. But, since we're not seeing too many famines in the US and Europe anymore, the advantage the gene provided has turned into a big disadvantage.

Yes, if the mother has extra fat cells, the child will be born with more fat cells. You CAN NOT get rid of fat cells, only make them smaller, but it does take up space... so some people really can't get thinner. But true obesity is not genetic. This is only for a little excess weight. Usually it looks genetic due to the fact that the entire family has the same eating habits and so they end up looking the same.

it can be genetic and it can be about the dietry and excercise decisions of the person or the person's family.
if your friends adoptive parents are also then it may just be about diet and excercise decisions, from what I hear genetics just say how likely you are to have some clasifyable condition or something, my parents have trouble with losing weight, and I'm a swig who eats like shaggy. lol
so there's the genetic (nature), the life training (nurture) and the decisions you make... (which can have no connection to nature nurture nor logic)...

yes it can be genetic, but given that overweight has become the norm in the U.S. it could have just been a coincidence. in other cases i think families being overweight can be attributed as much to learned bad eating habits and lack of physical activity every bit as much as genetic metabolism issues.

There seems to be a genetic preposition to gain weight easier - but it's only a preposion, not an automatic happening!

So it's a bit harder for such a person to keep a normal weight, but nonetheless it's possible.

yes. it all has to do with insulin sensitivity. some people release too much insulin when they eat. this causes more fat stored. it also causes them to over eat. when your insulin levels are high you dont get a sense of fullness. thats why some people get fat just by smelling food.
