I took my digital camera to the beach and it accidently got covered in sand..there is now sand in the lens, and the shutter won't close! the battery still works but I want to know if there is any point in taking this to a camera repair, or will that cost more than buying a new one?

Unfortunately your camera is now a paperweight.

Using compressed air will likely drive sand into even more recesses in the camera. Plus I have an aversion to using compressed air for anything other than tires or other inflatables.

Since repair will likely cost more than a replacement you may as well start shopping.

Sand and salt are the worst enemies of fine mechanics.

If you can't blow the sand off with compressed air, there is little you can do.

Camera repair places are becoming rarer and rarer. One of the best known in New York City closed a few years ago. The reason is that most cameras sold today cannot be repaired because they are not made to be repaired and spare parts are rarely available. But if you have a repair shop near you, it can't hurt to ask.
