LCDs are more robust technology than plasma screens so should last longer.
Cheap hi def TVs often have only analogue tuner so you need a separate digibox. That's not a problem for many people but if you're going to wall mount the TV it's another box on the shelf.
Best future-proofing (if you can afford it) is 1080p hi def (only found on some v large panels). Current hi def standard is 720p/1080i.
Two or more HDMI connections is a good idea too because HDMI will replace SCART.
As with tube televisions the panels are all made by a handful of manufacturers: LG Phillips/ Sharp/Samsung/Westinghouse. The difference is in the graphics processor and you get what you pay for there.
I hesitate to recommend a make because peoples eyes differ. I like my Sony Bravia but have met others who don't rate Sony's picture quality very much.
Other than that it's down to whether you like things like picture-in-picture, freeze frame etc. Some people think they're gimmicks, others wouldn't be without them.

If you buy a big name like Sony you can definitely do without the rip-off 5 year extended warranty because the chance of an LCD TV going wrong is slim. (Wouldn't be so sure about a plasma screen though. I know two people who regretted buying one).

The other big rip-off is the cost of wall mounting kits, anything up to £300. There are cheaper aftermarket ones out there and your home contents insurance should cover you if it falls off the wall.

I believe Plasmas are more energy hungry than LCDs
