I am a first time buyer. I am planning to buy a cheap used car. Can anyone please tell me which make and models I should be looking for so that it is cheaper to insure. I am 28 years old. And recently got driving licence.

Go for cars that have a small engine size - 1.4 or smaller. Also, you'll get cheaper insurance if your car is in a garage at night. Diesel cars are usually cheaper to insure too.

I don't know the UK insurance system - but I'd believe it to be similar as in continental Europe. So keep off cabriolets or sports cars, also off sporty models of compact cars (i.e. Golf GTI, Astra GSi, Focus RS and so on).

Probably it would be the cheapest to get a normal-strong version of a rather small car that's not asked by thieves - so keep off BMW-Mercedes-Audi-Golf and rather go for a small Japanese or French car - or a Ford or Opel/Vauxhall.

Insurance groups range from Group1 (Fiat Panda) to Group 2 (Porsche 911) and a number of other factors. There's a good overview at http://www.carseller.co.uk/car-insurance.htm
