I got a notice in June that I owed $3,800 for unreported interest earned from stocks. I contacted my tax prepareer and after I got all the necessary forms together, we sent in the paperwork to the IRS. With this paperwork, I should have owed nothing. I checked the box saying I didn't agree with their ammended return and mailed the paperwork to prove it.

Now, I have received another notice from the IRS saying I owe them money. It's like they never received my paperwork from before, but I sent it certified and checked the USPS website and it has been delivered.

I plan on calling my tax preparation person tomorrow, but in the meantime, does anyone know what could be going on?

it's more than likely that they've crossed in the mail. Before going to your tax prep person try calling the irs number on the notice to see if they got the corrected information from you. I'm a CPA/Tax Preparer and that has happened a number of times with clients of ours. It all works out in the end though.

Did you have taxes due on your last return? Have you actually seen this letter from the IRS? It doesn't make much sense that the IRS would send such a letter. The withholding is just an estimate of what your actual taxes will be. You should claim more or less exemptions to come out about even. Going to single and 0 from married and 3, would be a huge difference in the amount withheld from each paycheck. Even if you get it all back at the end of the year, why should you give the government a interest free loan. I suggest you call the IRS and check into this further before actually changing your withholding.

Did you just file an amended return showing the corrections, or did you send it in to the place the letter directed you to? If you just filed an amended return, then it would take awhile for the two papers to catch up with each other - the corrections are supposed to be sent in with the form saying that you don't agree.

If you did that within the time allowed but still got another letter for the same thing, call the number that's on the letter and ask them what's happening.

The notices are all computer generated based upon time of your prior request. When you sent your ammended copy in and paperwork, it was received by a human and it takes time to review it and get it into the system. Generally there is a number you can call, but you can probably still expect to get the computer generated requests for payment.

Most likely your information is in the hands of someone who has not yet processed it, therefore another notice has been sent out from their automated system. I wouldn't call your tax preparer tomorrow, i'd call the IRS's 1800 number, that way you can find out for yourself, with your own ears, what is going on, without getting any runaround and put your mind at ease.

GRRRRRRRR @ the IRS, lol... Good Luck

I agree that all correspondence should be replied to in writing. First, call and get a name, and repeat what you said in your question. Don't expect them to solve the problem over the phone.

Then, send copies of everything a second time, plus a copy of your certified letter receipt and maybe a printout from USPS showing that the letter was received. Put a cover letter indicating that you had responded previously, and you spoke to (name of contact) etc.

call the phone number listed on your letter from the IRS, the representative will be able to let you know if any of your paperwork you sent in has been received.
if a phone number is not listed try 1-800-829-0922

It probably has crossed in the mail. Remember, the IRS gets tons of correspondance.

Your best bet, TAKE the copies to the local IRS office. With the IRS you can swap forms forever, but nothing beats face to face contact.

Remember, everything takes time - and you may have to work directly with an IRS agent.

You can get a phone consult or meeting with them on this dispute. It may take a few meetings to get this resolved.

Don't worry, as long as you're responding, and it turns out that you're right, you won't owe penalties.

Now breathe.

After calling the number on the notice, respond in writing to the notice, just to document the fact that you did nnot ignore the notice.
