Who said America is shutting down its nuclear reactors? New to us Americans. The fact is, we are trying to build more.

US isn't shutting down reactors, they might be refurbishing, repairing or relocating. India with limited crude oil reserves do need other options as thermal plants r run on coal which India has huge reserves of but that coal is of low quality meanin it emits more pollution than energy n hydro plants r extremely expensive to build. Either v can build wind farms which r cheaper n environment friendly or v can try nuclear. Right now only 2% of energy produced in India is nuclear, with the estimaed use of energy doubling by 2030 v do need as many options available as possible.

America has the undue influence of radical environmentalists who have used fear mongering and bureaucracy to cause the permits for building a nuclear power plant to take so long that the private sector can't afford to get investors to wait over 15 years to see profit from their investments. It takes about 15 years, from initial approval until the nuclear plant is ready to "throw the switch," before a nuclear power plant can be ready.

I think people in India have more common sense. I just look at what is going on in my country and shake my head in disgust.

There is energy crunch in India.India has got no other way but to have atomic power. But atomic power is costly, double the
cost of the present power generated [Generating cost Rs 3
per unit while for others which we are generating at present
is Re 1.20 per unit].Atomic reactors are costly equipments.
To build India ,we must incorporate 10 atomic power plants
at the earliest and add two per year for another ten years.
Care is to be taken that they are militarily safe and
environmentally safe.

Nuclear power is a relatively safe, relatively clean source of energy -- while not renewable, it's still better than oil and MUCH better and cleaner than coal.

So, as an energy alternative to fossil fuels, it makes a lot of sense for any country that can get past the knee-jerk fear that a lot of Americans still hold (for really no valid reason).

You must be reading the back of a Post Toasties box.

If we are determined to be energy self-sufficient - a long shot for any nation - then nuclear power must be part of the equation. In addition to MORE oil exploration.
