As an Atheist, do you think it would be better to totally phase out religion and end all world religion, or limit religion to the churches, removing it's influence from the government, education and society? Or would you leave things as they are?

How would be the best way to go about it? What would be the effects?

Thanks for your answers in advance.

We've no need to limit or phase out religions. Given a certain set of economic conditions, like those found in modern day Europe for instance, the rates of religiosity will naturally decrease on their own.

Free speech allows ideas, even religious fantasies, to be placed in a 'market place,' of sorts. These ideas can then be freely discussed, allowing the society to accept or reject such ideas in the market place of ideas. It is ludicrous to suggest religious thought or ideas should be limited and we already know banning religion, much like banning alcohol, is utterly pointless.

The only area wherein religious ideas must be banned is in government, which exists to serve all citizens, not just those citizens who cling to any particular religious fantasy.

A life in which man says he and only he can come up with the answers.....without realizing, no matter how adament you are...science will never be able to mathematically or expirimentally be able to provide all answers.

Science, great as it is, will one day be able to explain exactly "how" life started from nothing. But science can not answer "Why". Why life started.

So...will anything be able to totally phase out "religion"?

YES....

But it won't be science...it won't be man's enlightenment, and it won't be atheism.

And when "religion" is phased out...it will be for the benefit of mankind.... Because this will happen when He returns...and He eradicates evil, pain, suffering and grief, and once again...walks in the cool of day with us.

but also...prior to that...there will be one who hypnotizes the world into thinking they are doing a good thing by "phasing out" the outdated fundamental Christian. Oopps...did I say that? That perhaps some here will be fooled? Ooops again.

That would be up to the individual. Religion can't be phased out of a person's mind without his wanting it phased out.
Certainly I believe that religion should be kept out of government and schools.
Algebra should not be taught in churches, and religion should not be taught in schools.
How should we go about it ? More and more people are realizing that the supernatural does not exist . All supernatural equals superstition. Deeply embedded beliefs are hard and slow to change, but they do change.
Two generations ago just about everybody believed in spooks, spells, evil eye, curses, gods, angels, psycics, fortune tellers, and all of the other supernaturals. A lot of that is disappearing. Many are still superstitious, but in a much smaller percentage than eigthty years ago.

As an atheist, I'm not for phasing out any kind of thinking. I am more in favor of promoting reason and the scientific method. Logical thinking that includes humanistic ideals is more likely to attract people than to try to impose some sort of thought police onto the rest of society.

I'm troubled by those who talk of eliminating religion. If reason takes hold people don't need religion. It's only in an effort to conquer fears that religion has any sway. If people no longer are afraid, they don't need a placebo to quell their fears.

The world contains many different structures are you talking about the USA or Germany for example.

You will never get rid of superstition, education is the best way to go but there are many educated believers. The most important thing is that government needs to be secular.

Remove it completetly.

"Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people."

The world needs to work towards the benefit of all mankind not just one religion.

Relgion is fine as long as it is not influencing governement. That's how stupid, irrational wars start. Government needs to concern itself with the laws of the land, the economy, defense, and the betterment of it's citizens, not worry about what "God" wants them to do. Keep religion out of public schools--for crying out loud, nobody needs "God" to learn how to read and write.

The First Amendment says "Freedom of Religion" Not loss of it. Atheists it would be most benefit mankind if we could eliminate them back into Christan's or at least Jewish.
