There are commercial barrier creams that can be applied to help limit the skin's exposure to the poison ivy oils that cause the reaction. Have never used them, so no advice on how well they work. I know in this heat it is the last thing that your hubby will want to do, but wearing protective clothing is pretty effective (long sleeves, long pants, gloves). The oil is easily removed from skin with soap and water, so washing ASAP after exposure is very effective. You must wash within 30 minutes of exposure for this to work. I have heard that rubbing alcohol used on the skin will remove the oils as well. Making sure that he can reliably ID the plants can help, too. If he can see them, he can avoid them, or don protective clothing after he sees them. If he is in heavy brush, he may not be able to see the plant, if it is mixed in with other vegetation, however. If he is burning the brush, make sure that he does not stand anywhere near the smoke! The oils are not destroyed by fire, and adhere to the smoke particles. If he gets in the smoke of a fire that has poison ivy, poison oak, or poison sumac in them, he will break out everywhere. Here is a site that gives more info. Hope this helps.

This is BEST way I have ever heard to prevent getting poison ivy or oak.It sounds really odd, but it helps me, I am so allergic I just have to walk by it and I get it. Tell your husband to not only wear long sleeves and pants, if he can, but, to rub dish washing detergent all over the exposed areas before he goes out in it. Sure, you laugh..but it has helped my family for YEARS. Just a fine, thin film will help cut though the oils that carry the poison. Then when he comes home, rub more of the detergent onto his hands and change in the laundry room, toss his clothes into the washer alone, careful to not touch to much of his clothing. Then, get in the shower and use shampoo to wash his whole body. This cuts through any oil that might still be on him.
I am 48 years old and have been doing this all my life, Mom insisted as we all had to work in the garden, hay fields and forests. Only once did I get it, and that was when I thought mom was weird for making us do that...HA little did I know !
Mom is always right.

wear long sleeves and pants but sometimes people tend to get it cause they are very allergeric to it. you can catch in the air if you are too close to it and its bad once you get it. as you must know. the best thing is to stay away from it period.
